Hilo man held in child porn (on probation)

Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Olson said "a large team of FBI investigators worked around the clock" over the holiday weekend on the case.

Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman with the state Department of Human Services, said last night that the children have been placed in foster care and are safe. She declined further comment because of the ongoing investigation.

Olson said the investigation began last week with information from authorities in Oklahoma who "turned up some videos" while serving a search warrant.

Seguerre's criminal history in Hawai'i includes convictions for theft, forgery and contempt of court.

On Oct. 17, 2007, he was found guilty of one count of second-degree theft and second-degree forgery and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, according to records filed with the Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center. Seguerre also was placed on five years' probation.

In July 2008, Seguerre was found guilty of fourth-degree theft and was ordered to pay a $100 fine.  (And he did not go to jail for his probation violation?????)

(This is what happens when criminals are not imprisoned.)

Hawaii murder suspect already on probation in domestic violence

Ahn was sentenced to a year in prison and five years of probation in 2007 for assaulting his wife at a Pearl City home they shared with their five young children, according to court records. (And he did not go to jail for the probation violation?????)

Ahn pleaded guilty in that case and to a separate charge of breaking into a car at Ala Moana Center in 2006. Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto sentenced him to a year in prison and five years of probation.

Ahn was also convicted in December 2004 of second-degree terroristic threatening and was sentenced to a year of probation.

SB: HOPE deserves support

Hawaii's Opportunity Probation with Enforcement, or HOPE, was conceived by Circuit Judge Steven S. Alm, a former city deputy prosecutor and Hawaii's U.S. attorney under the Clinton administration, and implemented five years ago. In a short time, it resulted in reduced recidivism by convicts sentenced to probation instead of prison.

Probationers in the program are subjected to close scrutiny, given only a few hours instead of a month's notice for drug tests. If they fail the test, they are put behind bars for a relatively short time, beginning with two or three days.

(So, under the current system, probationers get a 1-month heads up on their drug tests and they are not put in jail if they fail.  See the two stories above.)

Big Isle man charged in 5-year-old's death

Poulin, who is disabled and uses a cane to walk, was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of abuse of a family/household member.

Poulin had no criminal record other than a conviction for violating a temporary restraining order held by another girlfriend, Medeiros said.  (What was the sentence for that?)

Police said the injuries on the child appeared suspicious and that an hour prior to the drowning, a worried citizen reported a man had grabbed a girl by the hair and slammed her against a cement wall at Shipman Street and Kamehameha Avenue.

KSBE: Next time a girl is raped and kidnapped, police will be notified (this is progress?)

However, we also recognize the police have a kuleana (responsibility) to investigate and gather evidence when a potential crime has occurred," Chun wrote. "We respect that kuleana and in the future will notify the proper authorities of serious offenses even as we fulfill our kuleana to our haumana (students)."

The girl, a boarder at the school, told the administration on the morning of Aug. 31, a Monday, that she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted in a dormitory on the Kapalama campus over the weekend.

Senators offer option to air layoff concerns  (no solutions, just another HGEA campaign 2010 rally)

Hawaii state senators are giving the public - and themselves - another opportunity to vent their frustrations with Gov. Linda Lingle's proposed layoffs of state employees, this time those from the Department of Health.

The state Senate's Ad Hoc Committee, which was organized to serve as a watchdog for Lingle's layoff plans, will conduct an informational briefing from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Baldwin High School. It's the panel's second such meeting on the Valley Isle. The committee will take testimony relating to the potential impacts on Maui County's community and the public's health.

The committee has asked Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang (Anti-DU protester) and Maui Memorial Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Wesley Lo (benefits from State-imposed medical monopoly) to speak, along with the staff and directors of other Health Department programs.

(None of these worthless Democrat Senators are offering any solutions.  And nowhere do the propagandists of the Maui news point out that the Governor called for Furloughs--and the unions have forced layoffs.)

Kauai: Commission defers action on 30 vacation-rental requests (Stimulating the economy, eh?)

LIHU‘E — The county Planning Commission on Tuesday deferred action on a recommendation to approve 30 transient vacations rentals outside the visitor destination areas.
Under new county law, vacation rentals are generally not allowed outside VDAs, including Po‘ipu, Kapa‘a and Princeville, but existing vacation rentals outside VDAs are allowed if they receive non-conforming use certificates.
The recommendation to issue NCU certificates for 30 specific properties from Kekaha to Ha‘ena outside VDAs came from Ian Costa, county Planning Department director.
Barbara Robeson of Wainiha, a former planning commissioner now with the group Protect Our Neighborhood ‘Ohana, argued against “blanket approvals”....

State of Hawaii Heats Up the Fight Against Bed Bugs (another problem for tourism caused by environmentalists)

Bedbugs are coming back after being banished from the US for years.  This is the result of the DDT ban.  The DDT ban is responsible for preventing the eradication of malaria throughout the third world.  Malaria claims somewhere between 1-3M lives every year,  The ban was introduced in 1972. 37 years = 37M to 111M deaths from malaria.  The 1972 DDT ban is the founding act of the environmental movement in the US.  It is therefore an act of justice that bedbugs are returning.

If you want to keep bedbugs out of your hotel, apply DDT (illegally) to the top of all your box springs.  DDT is still sold legally in Mexico which conveniently prevents the return of malaria to the USA.  Otherwise you can wait til the bedbugs show up and then hire these guys to heat the room to 150 degrees.  I'm sure the visitors will be very impressed.

Democrat Borreca: Polls in governor's race too sketchy to count on

Recently Rep. Neil Abercrombie's staff was out front with its own poll, which showed him beating Mayor Mufi Hannemann in next year's race for governor by 12 percentage points, with a 4.5 percent margin of error.

Interesting numbers, but the Abercrombie campaign would not release the entire poll, nor would they give the wording on the questions.

Abercrombie also appeared on top in a June poll taken by Daily Kos, the vocal, liberal Democratic blog, which is about as neutral as Keith Olbermann or Fox News

...while Hannemann has not sent out his own poll, he was bragging earlier in the year that unspecified "union polls" had him leading Abercrombie in next year's race for governor.

(Another Democrat Borreca account of the exciting "election"--ie the Democrat Primary.  Duke Aiona?  Who's that?)

160 soldiers back home

He was part of the lead element of 160 Tropic Lightning soldiers from the brigade's Headquarters, Headquarters Company, and the 25th Special Troops Battalion who marched into the staging area at Wheeler Army Airfield, cheered on by spouses, children and friends.

The scene will be repeated over the next month until all of the 4,500 soldiers from the 3rd Brigade and the 25th Division's headquarters are back in quarters. The last welcome-home ceremony is expected to take place in November after Maj. Gen. Robert Caslen turns over the command of Task Force Lightning to Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo, who heads the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga.
