Fake Indian Tribe: 9th Circuit Rules Injunction Moot After Nai Aupuni Dissolves Itself

Star-Adv: Reasonable Concern About OHA Management of Papahanaumokuakea

SA: …OHA already has been a consultative partner for the past 10 years, said Suzanne Case, DLNR director, so it’s not a stranger to the management process.

There is reasonable concern about whether they can provide oversight that’s consistent without becoming bogged down in interagency bureaucracy.

But both Case and Kamana‘o Crabbe, the chief executive officer of OHA, do seem to agree on the mission, and that’s a good sign. The administration of Gov. David Ige has supported elevating OHA’s role to become a co-trustee, and that impetus should be helpful.

Further, Crabbe said, all the parties are resolved to become advocates for all shared concerns. This means preserving environmental quality as well as enabling cultural practices, guarding what he described as the “realm of the gods.” …

Big Q: Do you agree with President Obama’s expansion of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument?

Bird Deaths and Renewable Energy Converge at IUCN World Conservation Congress

IM: IUCN Motion Number 3 deals with bird - power infrastructure interactions.

"ALARMED by mounting evidence that a largely unaddressed silent epidemic of electrocution and collision of a wide diversity of birds and bats is resulting from inappropriately designed and routed electricity distribution infrastructure, with significant negative impacts on some avian populations”

“AWARE that bird mortality through electrocution and collision is documented in every region of the world”

“The World Conservation Congress, at its session in Hawai`i, …CALLS UPON governmental bodies and power companies to work together and to ensure that all new and where possible existing power infrastructure complies with measures to prevent bird electrocution and collision.”

Kaheawa, Maui was the first wind generation facility in the United States to implement a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).

Because there is monitoring and collection of data in Hawai`i, it is known that Hawai`i wind facilities have killed Hawaiian petrel, pueo, nēnē, gray francolin, white-tailed tropicbird, eurasian skylark, black rancolin, pacific golden plover, and the ring-necked pheasant….

The Hawai`i wind facilities with Habitat Conservation Plans are Kaheawa Pastures I & 2, Kahuku Wind, Kawailoa Wind, Auwahi Wind, and Lana`i Meteorological Towers.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USF&W) is accepting public comments through September 6, 2016 regarding an Endangered Species Act (ESA) Incidental Take Permit (ITP) for the killing of species covered by the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Long-Term Seabird Habitat Conservation Plan (LTHCP)….

The open question is the bird and bat mortality rates for centralized solar….

Anti-GMO Hooser Circling the Drain

KE: After licking his wounds for a couple of weeks following his dismal Primary showing, Kauai Councilman Gary Hooser has emerged to announce: “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

Actually, no one reported that Hooser is politically dead. We just observed that he's circling the drain. As is the inevitable fate of every failed politician.

In surfacing, Hooser relies upon his usual double-pronged strategy: beg and blame.

I was surprised and disappointed more Kaua’i residents who share our values, goals and vision for Kauai’s future did not show up to vote on August 13th.

Uh, Gary, did you ever stop to think that's all there is? That the measly 5,035 votes cast for you — half the number Derek Kawakami received — represent the extent of your support?

Heck, just look at the precinct results, and your own campaign contributions. It's evident your base is North Shore haoles. And that's not enough to either win the election, or claim that you represent the people of Kauai.

Yet Hooser blames others….

Homeless Migrate to Hawaii Kai, Set up Lounge Chairs, Begin Bum Fights

SA: …“These people are going to be looking for other areas, and they’re going to be going into the neighborhoods,” said Elizabeth Reilly, vice chairwoman of the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board. “If you clear them out of one area and the encampment is now exposed, they move.”

She added, “All we’re doing is kicking the can down the road.”

Earlier this year people were seen “disappearing” into 3 acres of overgrown vegetation along Hawaii Kai Drive that belong to the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association, said marina manager Beverly Liddle. Subsequently, 20 encampments were discovered in the brush.

“They had kitchen tables and cooking equipment and little treehouses,” Liddle said. “It was quite elaborate. We discovered it quite by accident.”

Honolulu police were notified, and the occupants were given weeks to pack and leave, which they did about three months ago. Some of the homeless campers then migrated to Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association land on Keahole Street near the “kiss-and-ride” parking area and the Hawaii Kai Dog Park, Liddle said.

Liddle said no more than “a handful of complaints,” including “using bad language at night and fighting,” have surfaced at that area….

When Nohonani Landscape LLC knocked down all the brush, a circle of lounge chairs and garbage were left behind….

“There isn’t anywhere for them to go.”  (Except for the shelters, but then they wouldn’t be homeless anymore….)
