Mass Layoffs Coming at UH?

SA: … Without a clear vision and direction by political and university leadership, the fiscal crisis resulting from the pandemic threatens to forever damage an institution invaluable to the life of Hawaii. …

UH is a billion-dollar-plus employer engaging thousands of workers in many vital occupations. Laying off large numbers of such workers — largely lecturers, student employees and staff — is likely….

like many other public universities across the US, over the years UH has been replacing shared governance with corporate-style priorities and administrative practices. One result of this is the expansion of resources dedicated to executive management positions: executive management salaries at the university have jumped from about $25 million in 2013, to $36 million in 2019. This diversion of resources away from instruction and research severely diminishes UH’s ability to be a public good….

Decisions about UH’s operation, including budget allocations, must be made not for short-term gain and immediate results but for a sustainable society in time to come. We believe a public university oriented toward a robust notion of public good is vital for a thriving Hawaii — that is, for our common future as residents of these islands….

Hawaiian Airlines: From Bad To Worse

SA: … In Q2 alone, Hawaiian Airlines load factor was only 23.2%, way below its peers. The company will continue to have such a low load factor in the upcoming months, as the State of Hawaii is about to introduce a 14-day quarantine for interisland travelers. While it seems that the airline has enough liquidity to survive the pandemic, as it doesn’t have an overleveraged balance sheet, its growth prospects look grim. By being exposed to the Hawaiian islands, which are currently closed for most travelers, the airline will not be able to create any value anytime soon….The recent earnings report for Q2 showed that the worst for Hawaiian Airlines is yet to come. From April to June, the airline’s revenues decreased by 91.6% Y/Y to $60 million, while its adjusted net loss was $174.7 million. The company also burned $3.3 million per day just to stay alive….

Police issued over 200 citations on the first day of Oahu’s new park closures

HNN: … Police issued more than 200 citations to people in parks and beaches on Saturday, mainly in Waikiki, on the first day of park closures on Oahu.

With Mayor Kirk Caldwell working to discourage social gatherings and address a surge in new COVID-19 infections on Oahu, there were no umbrellas, chairs or tents at Ala Moana Beach Park.

It was a similar sight on the North Shore and west side.

“I didn’t see any loungers and even the surf was relatively empty,” said John Murray, of Kaneohe, who was surfing at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Under the mayor’s orders, people can cross through the parks and over the sand to get to the water.

But that’s about it ….

Two more OCCC inmates have confirmed cases of COVID-19

HNN: … A spokesperson said the two newest cases were confirmed Saturday evening, and brings the total number of OCCC inmates with COVID to three.

The first case in the facility was a newly-admitted inmate. DPS says the inmate was brought to OCCC on Monday and placed in a mandatory, 14-day intake quarantine. The inmate was tested Tuesday after the department learned of a possible exposure.

An Adult Corrections Officer at OCCC also previously tested positive, officials said Friday.

DPS says a total of four ACOs have the virus: One at OCCC, One at Halawa, and two at Waiawa.

“The facility acted quickly to implement the department’s COVID-19 pandemic protocol for correctional facilities, in an effort to mitigate any potential spread of the virus,” Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda said, in a previous news release.

DPS says with the latest cases, contact trace is pending with the Department of Health…

Homeless Dude has 10 Convictions—State Fails to Force him into Prison-Shelter – now wanted for #11

KHON: … On March 14, 2014, at about 7:00 p.m., the victim was reading a book inside of her tent at the Waianae Boat Harbor when a male began to argue with her. As the argument escalated, the male began to punch her numerous times. The victim then went to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a fractured orbital and a concussion.  (Which YOU paid to treat.)  Police (YOU pay) were notified and were able to locate the male. The male, who was later identified as Fred Aiwohi Jr., was subsequently placed under arrest for Assault in the Second Degree. (And YOU paid for that, too.)

Aiwohi Jr. is now wanted on a $20,000 cash-only bench warrant for failing to appear to his HOPE hearing. (And YOU are paying for this.)

Aiwohi has 10 prior convictions and is known to frequent the Waianae area…. (And you keep paying again and again….)

Kauai 181 Homeless Moved into Housing

TGI: … On Kaua‘i, there are 716 individuals receiving direct rental assistance through the county.

On top of that, there are 50 people who have been authorized to receive rental assistance and are searching for housing.

An additional 700 people have recently been sent letters inviting them to complete the Housing Agency’s rental assistance application.

There’s 23 individuals or families on specialized rental assistance to move from houselessness to housed, and 48 on a waiting list for this help….

Hale Kokua provides a resource for the houseless community in making referrals to direct assistance. In fiscal year 2019, the Housing Agency reported moving 181 houseless individuals into permanent housing.

The county is also looking at alternative sites for the houseless communities currently confined to several beach parks due to the coronavirus pandemic….
