Abercrombie predicts Duke Aiona will be next governor

AP: 1986 all over again

In the Democratic governor's race, there's no love lost between the 74-year-old Abercrombie and the 56-year-old Hannemann, who first faced off in 1986 in a congressional primary, won by Hannemann, in which he attacked Abercrombie for being soft on drugs and claimed that he "enjoyed marijuana." Abercrombie said those assertions were untrue; Hannemann later lost the general election.

This year's campaign has been filled with personal attacks and comparisons of their character, ethnicity, experience and views on gay rights.

Abercrombie blasted Hannemann's campaign following a radio ad by Hannemann supporters that claimed Abercrombie is "unacceptable" because he doesn't hold "traditional Christian values." Hannemann is Mormon, and Abercrombie's campaign has said he was "confirmed as an Episcopalian."

Abercrombie backs same-sex civil unions, while Hannemann has said he would have vetoed civil union legislation that passed the Legislature earlier this year but was vetoed by Lingle.

Hannemann also has drawn criticism for telling a carpenters' union "I look like you," a reference to Hannemann's Samoan-German ancestry; Abercrombie is white. A Hannemann campaign brochure emphasized that he was born in Hawaii and Abercrombie in New York.

Mudslinging between the candidates could damage the winner's chances of success in the Nov. 2 general election against the Republican nominee. In the Republican primary, Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona holds a vast advantage over attorney John Carroll in fundraising, campaign organization and advertising….

…Hannemann has kept the pressure on by saying Abercrombie is making unfunded campaign promises, received a low rating from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and is trying to "retire to the governor's job." The Hannemann brochure also mockingly praised Abercrombie for winning a beard contest.

Abercrombie has accused the Hannemann of manipulating Honolulu's proposed rail line for political purposes and then abandoning the project by resigning from the mayor's office halfway into his second term to run for governor.

Gay-Atheist lobby fails to have Calvin Say disqualified

Gay activists challenged Say’s residency — and his candidacy for re-election — claiming that he actually lives with his wife at his mother-in-law’s home in a different House district in Pauoa. Similar complaints failed in 2006. Activists cited a neighbor who said no one appeared to live at Say’s 10th Avenue address and low water usage at the home as part of their evidence.

Oshiro calls photo of men kissing “negative imagery’

Yet he is a leading advocate for gay marriage and gay civil unions.  He obviously thinks his constituents are so stupid that they will not recognize the contradiction.

The Aloha Family Alliance that sponsored the flier was described by member James Silva as a small group of six mostly Catholic men from the Aina Haina area.

A word in the flier is misspelled.  Arrogant legislator Blake Oshiro said, "I hope they learn to spell.”

Gay-Atheist lobby extracts $20K from Hawaii Family Forum for opposing gay civil unions

Hawaii Family Forum, a Christian charity that helped lead the fight against civil unions, spent so much money politicking last year that it had to pay the IRS $20,741 in taxes for its "excessive lobbying," according to its latest tax return.

The nonprofit group reported spending $125,695 on lobbying last year, a huge jump over the zero dollars it said it spent on lobbying in 2008. The change comes after at least two complaints were filed with the Internal Revenue Service about the forum's extensive political activities.

"This tax form just confirms what we had suspected, and that is that they engaged in excessive lobbying, that they have no charitable programs, that they are 100 percent a lobbying organization," said Holly Huber, who filed a complaint with the IRS in June on behalf of Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church. "They should not be a tax-exempt nonprofit charitable organization. They are a political action group."

Negative advertising works in Hawaii

First, in the summer special election for the 1st Congressional District a mainland Republican special interest group slammed former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, and the Democrat went from leading the polls to coming in third in the actual race….

Here in Hawaii, our negative ads are models of decorum compared to mainland attack ads, says U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye. But even Inouye said he was concerned about the Mufi Hannemann brochure attack on Neil Abercrombie. That ad asked voters to compare the two candidates, including their wives and where they were born.

"Let's keep it clean," advised Inouye. (“Clean” is whatever keeps him in power.)

The study is published in the November 2010 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, online Sept. 16. It was funded by the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Senator Hemmings says wife is innocent of theft charges

"Not one cent was missing. When you use the word steal, that means something was taken and nothing was taken. There were two audits of Blueprint for Change and the organization, including its board of directors, defended my wife. This was brought about because of one fired employee" said Hemmings.

Attorney General Mark Bennett says Lydia Hemmings had prior convictions of forgery and theft in 1991, and they treated this case like any other.

Republican activists urge crossover vote…for Abercrombie

Why should Republicans leave it up to the Democrats?  Hawaii has an open primary, unlike some states that require you to register with the party that you are going to vote for in the Primary.   With two strong candidates running against each other in the Democrat primary, the Republican cross over vote could be the deciding factor on who goes to the general election.  We are going to vote for Neil Abercrombie, and here’s the reasons why that is correct for Republicans to do:

We need to immediately get rid of Mufi Hannemann. We are not Abercrombie fans at all but in the race of Neil vs. Mufi, he is the lesser evil.  The quickest and simplest way to knock off Hannemann is in the primary.  Even Stevie Wonder can see Duke Aiona is going to have a tough time winning in the general vs. Mufi or Abercombie should the worst case scenario occur and Duke Aiona loses at least Mufi won’t be the Governor.
