Lobbyists, Legislators and Losers Line up for Lt Gov Campaign

CB: … Sherry Menor-McNamara, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, has registered a committee with the state Campaign Spending Commission.

If she runs, Menor-McNamara would run as a Democrat.

Jill Tokuda, a Democrat and former state senator, has also filed organization paperwork in a likely run for LG. Former City Councilmen Ikaika Anderson and Ron Menor have also filed LG paperwork.

Several other familiar political names are also reported to be thinking of running….

Hawaii’s primary election is Aug. 13, 2022.

Stupid Legislators Stray from Script, forget they are supposed to Attack Auditor

CB: … A public agribusiness corporation that was the target of a critical audit earlier this year is still struggling to reinvigorate Hawaii’s agricultural industry.

That audit found that the Agribusiness Development Corp. lacked a strategic plan to grow more local food as well as written policies to guide its work. The corporation’s leaders told lawmakers on Tuesday that it needs more time to address some of those issues and disputed some of the recommendations.

Meanwhile, a House investigative committee charged with evaluating the ADC’s progress in complying with the audit also appears torn between digging into the agency’s issues and continuing to raise questions about State Auditor Les Kondo, who came under fire from House Speaker Scott Saiki’s office earlier this year.

On Tuesday, Kondo pleaded with the  investigative committee to focus on fixing the ADC.

“The issues that we’ve reported have significant repercussions,” Kondo said. “The state has paid a high cost for ADC’s past inactions, and we continue to pay.”…

Family of teen paralyzed in ‘atrocious’ crash sues city and HPD, alleging a cover-up

HNN: … The family of a 14-year-old boy paralyzed in a car crash in Makaha nine days ago has sued the city and Honolulu Police Department, alleging the incident was the result of a police chase and that officers tried to cover it up.

Three Honolulu police officers are under criminal investigation in connection with the crash.

Dayten Gouveia has shown some progress from his injuries and can move parts of his upper body but he still can’t move from the waist down, family attorney Eric Seitz said.

Added one of his uncles: “There are no words to express how this has affected our family. I can say this: In our family there is really no anger but it’s more sadness.”

The lawsuit alleges that officers caused the collision with an illegal chase and then tried to cover up their involvement by filing reports falsely describing the crash as a single-car accident….

Seitz said said he normally doesn’t file a lawsuit so soon after an accident. But he said he needed to be able to quickly subpoena security camera video taken by nearby businesses.

He also said the lawsuit will allow Dayten’s family to tap into the driver’s car insurance policy to begin paying some of his initial medical expenses, which will be astronomical.

“In these kinds of cases, were talking about may be $15 to $20 million if in fact his paralysis persists,” said Seitz….

Honolulu police officer suspended for declining COVID-19 vaccine back on duty and inoculated

HNN: … The number of state and county employees who got the COVID-19 vaccine jumped in recent weeks after mandates were announced and went into effect.

In late August, the vaccination rate for the Public Safety Department was 77% ― the lowest for any state agency. A spokesperson said the rate now stands at 84%.

Meanwhile, a veteran Honolulu police officer chose to get the shot after he told Hawaii News Now earlier this month that he was put on leave without pay and served termination papers.

He refused to request a religious or medical exemption because he didn’t feel like he qualified.

Two other HPD officers in the same situation also ended up getting vaccinated.

But a lifeguard with Ocean Safety was fired last week for refusing to comply with the city’s vaccine mandate. He is the only city worker so far to be terminated because of the policy.

“Some people are at home on unpaid leave,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Some discussions are going on. Everybody has the opportunity to change their mind.”

A total of 885 city employees have requested exemptions….

Hawaii Island COVID survivor shares story after 90 days in ICU: ‘It’s horrible’

KHON: … Hawaii Island COVID survivor shares story after 90 days in ICU: ‘It’s horrible’…

She was discharged to a nursing facility on Sunday, Sept. 19, after she spent 90 days at the Queen’s Medical Center — almost all of them in ICU.

She shared her story from her hospital bed with her husband and high school sweetheart, Leabert Lindsey, by her side.

Hawaii mother, baby: Coronavirus survivors

“It’s horrible,” Lindsey said as she gasped for air, she still had the tracheostomy tube in. “The disease and how it affects your whole body.”

Lindsey contracted COVID at a family gathering in Utah in June.

Family of COVID survivor says it’s a miracle their loved one is home for Christmas

She was not vaccinated. It was not that she was against the vaccine; her husband said she just delayed getting it.

“I did my best to be careful, but I dropped the ball,” explained Lindsey.

Her husband, who is vaccinated, said the ordeal was traumatic for their entire family.

“It’s very devastating to get the call and say you got to come and see your loved one cause she might not make it,” he explained. “We had that happen a couple of times.”

They were so grateful that she pulled through. She got the first dose of the vaccine before she left the hospital.

“We wouldn’t want anybody to go through this. To prevent going through what we’ve gone through, get vaccinated,” Leabert said.

“If there’s any way to prevent this horrific illness, then that would be a number one goal,” Lindsey said.

Queen’s Medical Center Dr. Kuo-Chiang Lian was one of the many physicians who treated Lindsey during her stay.

He said recovering from severe COVID like she had could take weeks to months. He added some continue to suffer the effects of COVID one year or longer after the illness.

“She had pretty devastating lung injury so may have long effects beyond the current recovery period for that,” Dr. Lian said

That was in addition to other organ failures she suffered during her stay.

She also has to rebuild her strength. She was bedridden for 90 days — walking and even standing were a challenge.

“Two days before she left, she stood with a physical therapist for the first time,” Dr. Lian said. “She was able to stand with difficulty for only a few minutes, but it’s a tremendous success “…

Two powerful senior advocacy groups want age deleted from state’s triage plan

SA: … Kokua Council sent a letter to Hawaii Gov. David Ige and Dr. Libby Char, state Department of Health director, on Monday asking them to revise or rescind the plan. AARP Hawaii also is writing to the Department of Health and the Triage Allocation Framework Core Development Team to inform them that guidance from medical ethicists and the Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Service Administration has changed, and that the latest plan should remove age discrimination.

The state’s most recent plan for health care rationing was updated Sept. 15 and posted to the DOH website at bit.ly/398XbXB. Ige and Char have declined to say whether they support the plan. But Lt. Gov. Josh Green, an emergency room physician, has been speaking out against health care rationing in Hawaii or in any other state…

Mayor Blangiardi's Surprisingly Un-Trumpy Style

CB: … He said he voted for Trump in 2016, which was jarring to some Honolulu voters in traditionally blue-state Hawaii. While campaigning for mayor in 2020, though, Blangiardi said he was disappointed in Trump’s “leadership style, his antics, and everything else” and would not be voting for him again. But once-a-Trumper is still pretty Trumpy. I mean, how many people do you know who recover from that fever?

However, his positions on issues and his style have not been Trumpish at all.

Monday afternoon’s press conference about extending current Covid-19-related suspensions of large gatherings had Blangiardi sounding decidedly unlike the former president….
