Cronyism 101:  New PRP program offers training in politics, and profitable nonprofit advocacy

SA: … (with accuracy-inducing comments in parenthesis) Pacific Resource Partnership is taking applications for a new generation of local leaders (rail mongers) who want to join political campaigns, run for office or “take their passion for political advocacy (graft) to the next level.”

Successful applicants will undergo 15 weeks of classroom instruction on Oahu beginning in January, (with a focus on how to calculate correct bribe amounts) and the potential for internships in politics, political campaigns, public service, government, nonprofit advocacy (and money laundering).

The deadline for applications is Friday, including from neighbor island candidates. More information and applications are available at (the misnamed) partnersfordemocracyhi.org….

Navy Leak Not Related to Red Hill

SA Editorial:  … One week ago, residents from the neighborhoods of Foster Village and Aliamanu called 911 to report the smell of fuel, later found likely to have come from a leak from a fire suppression drain line. The Navy reported that about 14,000 gallons of a fuel-water mixture had leaked, and were contained and stored in an above-ground tank.

Admittedly, this was not the hazard presented almost eight years ago, in January 2014, when 27,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked from one of the Red Hill tanks themselves….

Maui: Applications to be available next week for ‘aina kupuna’ tax relief

MN: … The “aina kupuna” designation, made possible by a bill passed on second and final reading by the Maui County Council on Nov. 19, will allow qualifying property owners to only pay the minimum property tax, which is currently $350 a year. Some families have said their property tax bills are more than $10,000, as they live in highly sought areas near the beachfront.

One requirement is that the property dedicated as aina kupuna be owned in whole or in part in fee simple by one or more descendants of the person who owned the property at least 80 years prior to the application.

Applications will be available for pickup at the Real Property Assessment Division at the new County Service Center at 110 ‘Ala’ihi St., Suite 110, in Kahului, or downloaded from Mauipropertytax.com under the “forms” link.

The application must be filed with the Real Property Assessment Division on or before Dec. 31 to receive the aina kupuna tax rate for fiscal 2022-23, according to information from the Department of Finance….

Kauai County Green Police ask public to report eateries not complying with foam ban

KITV: … In the new year, Kauai restaurants and food trucks will not be able to use polystyrene containers to serve food. The County's Solid Waste Program Coordinator Allison Fraley explains, "In January, we are banning it. We want to make sure all the establishments are aware they should stop using polystyrene come January first."

To do that, it's asking the public to help report any violators. "We don't want anyone to confront the restaurants they love. We just want to be aware so we can go in and provide public education," she clarifies.….
