Aiona has more than $760,000, say reports filed yesterday with the state Campaign Spending Commission, putting him ahead of Hannemann's fund of $660,000 left over from his re-election.

Army to assess levels of uranium on Big Isle

The $150,000 testing is being done because the Army discovered in 2007 that uranium "spotting rounds" were used at Pohakuloa in the 1960s.

No.  The testing is being done because anti-American war activists have been lying about DU for several years now.  The tests will of course reveal that there is no DU-related radiation and the activists will continue to lie about it.  Taxpayers will lose $150,000.

Bill aimed at tightening financial disclosure rules

Sen. Roz Baker, who represents West and South Maui residents, introduced a bill (SB59) that would require state candidates to file the disclosure at the same time they file their nomination papers - making it a requirement before they could officially be accepted as candidates and have their names added to the ballot.

Hawaii set for years of roadwork in 'huge' $4B highways plan

The plan, which was unveiled Jan. 22, would touch residents in just about every community on every island, except Lana'i. It includes some 183 projects, from setting up a $50 million afternoon contraflow lane on H-1 Freeway west-bound to constructing a Lahaina Bypass for about $175 million.

Hotel occupancy in Hawaii drops to 60.9%

December's occupancy rate was the lowest for any month since December 2001 when it was 57.4 percent, according to Hospitality Advisors LLC. Occupancy was 70.4 percent in December 2007....O'ahu led the Islands with a 68.2 percent occupancy, which was off 5.1 percentage points compared with December 2007. Occupancy fell despite hotels' efforts to fill rooms by discounting....The Big Island's occupancy averaged 48.2 percent for the month, down 12.5 percentage points from December 2007's 60.7 percent occupancy.
