Advertiser: Hula Bowl vanishes

What had been Hawai'i's longest-running major sporting event is the apparent victim of a lack of interest after 62 years, the apathy extending to its last-known owner, Nick Logan, who hasn't confirmed or denied its demise.

The game, which had been played in January at Aloha Stadium, has neither a contract nor a date reserved at the facility for this year. Stadium manager Scott Chan said he has attempted to contact Logan but has not heard back.

Maui News: Nishiki charges bias by ethics chairman

Nishiki and his attorney said Kaufman had a personal agenda and tried to "steer" the board to go beyond its legal powers to take action against Nishiki at a board meeting in December.

Nishiki came under scrutiny when he revealed on a financial disclosure form that he had accepted a $100,000 personal loan from businessman Everett Dowling. While Nishiki was required to file the form within 15 days after he filed as a candidate for office on July 15, he missed the deadline and filed with the board on Oct. 16, after six phone reminders and a written warning.

Kaufman drew protests from Nishiki's attorneys and supporters after suggesting that the board could advise Nishiki he should step down and stand for election again.

Nishiki's affidavit, submitted to the board on Jan. 2, and a letter from his attorney Glenn Kosaka submitted Monday, said Kaufman's suggestion exceeded the board's authority.

Nishiki also argued that Kaufman had a conflict of interest because he had accepted a plane ride from Dowling and had a "close personal or business relationship" with the developer.

"Kaufman's suggestion that I renounce my County Council seat to permit a special election would potentially benefit his friend Everett Dowling," he wrote.

KHON:  Superferry to return to Kaua`i

More than a year after pulling its Kauai route after a rude welcome, the Hawaii Superferry intends to resume Kauai service in 2009, according to the state's draft EIS on harbor improvements.

"Nobody in the commercial harbor system looks forward to an incident like happened last time,” said Mike Formby of the state Department of Transportation Harbors Division. “So we hope that they fully engage the community, that they engage their elected leaders, that they have whatever meetings they have to have, so that when they go back it will be a peaceful operation, and safe."

The switch in the broadcast signal will only affect television viewers who receive their signal through an antenna. Cable and satellite dish subscribers are not affected, and viewers who have new digital-capable television sets also may not be affected.
