Sovereignty Child torturer: Carlisle critical of delayed sentence

Prosecutor Peter Carlisle lashed out yesterday at a judge's decision to allow a woman convicted in a brutal child abuse case to remain free as she pursues an appeal in which she will argue that as a native Hawaiian she is above state laws.

Jervis still a lawyer: Former trustee admits guilt in Lanikai car chase

A former Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate trustee pleaded guilty yesterday to two petty misdemeanors and driving under the influence of an intoxicant in a plea deal with prosecutors that allows him to keep his law practice.

Hawaii has one of the most stable populations in the nation, adding just 10,842 people last year, equal to less than 1 percent population growth, according to U.S. Census Bureau.

Lingle's pay-freeze plan is a challenge to state lawmakers

Suspending pay raises due the state's top executives in the next two years would nip just a small piece from an anticipated $1.1 billion revenue shortfall but would signal to taxpayers that their government leaders are willing to bear some of the pain of the economic downturn.

The most politically charged part of Lingle's plan would have state legislators give up a 3.5 percent pay raise in 2010. In addition, the governor is asking lawmakers to do without a 36 percent raise they are set to receive Jan. 1.

Education officials fear that cuts to public education may go deeper than the governor's recommendation of $40 million as the economy continues to worsen.

Lingle's budget plan taps rainy day fund

The governor wants to use $40 million from the rainy day fund, along with $221 million in savings and spending cuts, to erase a budget deficit for the fiscal year that ends in June.

Governor receives nominees to fill vacant 9th House District seat

WAILUKU -- The names of a Wailuku attorney, the chairman of the Maui County Democratic Party and a supervisor in the Maui Police Department's 911 Central Dispatch Office were forwarded today to Gov. Linda Lingle as candidates to fill the vacant 9th District House seat left by the death of longtime state Rep. Bob Nakasone.

Papaikou neighborhood planned

Roughly 200 home sites, including about 80 affordable home-and-lot packages, are being proposed for former Papaikou sugar cane land.
