CD1 Poll: Good News for Charles Djou
By Andrew Walden @ 8:37 PM :: 8124 Views :: Politicians, Republican Party

by Andrew Walden

This week’s Ward Poll numbers released by the Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now have good news for former Congressman Charles Djou.

Djou, an undeclared candidate for CD1, leads the pack with 58% favorable rating.  Senate President Donna Mercado Kim is second with 49% and the rest are in the thirties or below.  Djou has the highest name recognition with only 4% reporting they had never heard of him.

NAME Favorable Unfavorable  Never heard of
DJOU 58% 30% 4%
KIM 49% 22% 17%
TAKAI 34% 10% 36%
ANDERSON 33% 13% 27%
CHANG 22% 12% 47%
ESPERO 22% 14% 43%
XIAN 3% 4% 82%

Even more interesting, the breakdown on Djou’s support is completely inverted from the traditional Republican pattern:

Women are more favorable to Djou than men 60% to 57%.

Caucasians are the least favorable ethnic group for Djou at 50%:  63% of Filipinos like Djou, followed by 58% of Japanese and 58% of Hawaiians.

Djou’s popularity is 58% -- equal across all income groups--but his un-favorability drops as income drops.  Rich people are 35% unfavorable to Djou, followed by middle class people at 33% unfavorable, and low income at 25%.

Djou sweeps Republicans 84% and independents 72% but Democrats like Djou 48% to 39% and union members like Djou 55% to 40%.
