Dr. Keli'i Akina Wins Place in OHA General Election -

Credits His Opposition to Race-Based Nationhood for Strong Public Support

News Release from Akina for OHA August 10, 2014

Keli'i Akina, Ph.D. is now one of the six finalists running in the Hawaii General Election for three Trustee-at-Large seats in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.   Akina and five other candidates prevailed in the August 9 Primary Election contest with a starting field of 16 candidates.   As of the 3:15 AM post-election night count, Akina had garnered 34, 293 votes.

Of the top five vote earners in the Primary, Akina is the only one who has not occupied public office in the past.   The incumbent trustees John Waihee III and Rowena Akana are defending their seats, and former OHA Trustee Mililani Trask and former legislator Lei Ahu Isa are seeking return to public office.

Akina is also the only Trustee-at-Large candidate who categorically opposes all forms of an independent Hawaiian nationhood.  He believes that OHA should stop its pursuit of a race-based nation and, instead, use its financial resources to meet the needs of Hawaiians for housing, education, job opportunity, and healthcare.

Dr. Akina says, "The primary election results show that voters resonate with our message of unifying Hawaii instead of dividing Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians into separate nations.   We've received tremendous affirmation both from native Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians who have never before voted in the OHA election.   We are confident that, as our message gets out, more of the public will rally behind our campaign."

Keli’i Akina is an educator, public policy spokesperson and community leader.  He is running for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs position of Trustee-at-Large on a platform of “Uniting Hawaii.”  All registered voters are eligible to vote in the election of OHA Trustees.  Akina’s positions on issues can be found at www.TeamAkina.com.
