Need a Sandwich? Call an Ambulance

Message to Supporters, September 20, 2016

Among the many problems our community faces with the rampant homeless crisis is the use of our ambulances by a minority in our community, as a personal taxi service.  As the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported here, the City's ambulances should be for emergencies, but a small minority, mostly homeless, abuse this emergency service to the detriment of the rest of our community.

That's why I support re-establishing a community ambulance program that targets non-emergency requests from the top 50 callers of 911.  The community ambulance program was a smart and cost-effective program that freed resources for the rest of the City's critical emergency medical system.  But the program was cancelled by Kirk Caldwell.

Caldwell's decision to kill the community ambulance program, and our efforts to fix this foolish decision, are a perfect illustration of why we need new leadership at City Hall right now.  We must be honest with the people and recognize that homelessness is a major issue affecting so many aspects of our lives - including our emergency first responders.

That's why we need your help in this campaign for mayor.  Caldwell wants to talk about New York first responders from years ago.  Our campaign is about dealing with real issues that we are facing with actual ambulance services affecting Oahu right now.

Our community simply can't afford another four more years of incompetence.  We have had enough with cost overruns and mismanagement on rail, police leadership in disarray, an ethics commission director forced to resign because of politics, and a homeless crisis that jeopardizes our emergency services.  These are major issues that demand immediate attention without delay.

Your contribution of $50, $100 or any amount up to the maximum of $4,000, will help us communicate our message that our community desperately needs new leadership and cannot continue under the same mismanagement.  Wait another few weeks and we will miss our opportunity to change City Hall for the better.  Please help us now - every moment counts.

Aloha,

Charles Djou
