FACT CHECK: DCCC Continues to Spread False Information About Charles Djou

News Release from Hawaii GOP

HONOLULU—Democrat outsiders are once again attempting to smear Charles Djou’s record in an effort to deceive voters and infect Hawaii with dirty partisan politics. What these D.C. operatives don’t know is that the people of Hawaii will not allow mainlanders to interfere in an election that is about what is best for Hawaii. Unlike his opponents Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa, Charles Djou has never voted for a tax increase and has worked to preserve Hawaii's families by challenging government to leave more of the taxpayer's money in the hands of the taxpayers.

The faulty and unsubstantiated ad the DCCC released today has been fact checked below:

MYTH: The ad begins, “First we learned Charles Djou supported tax breaks for big corporations who export jobs and children’s futures.”

FACT: This claim is FALSE.The non-partisan group FactCheck.org called “blatantly false” the DCCC ad that criticized Djou for “that protects tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas”.  Factcheck.org said that the ad misrepresented Djou’s position on the issue, and “A Democratic ad claims a GOP House candidate pledged to protect breaks for sending jobs abroad. He didn’t.” (“A False Tax Attack,” Factcheck.org, April 9, 2010)

MYTH: It also mentions, “Djou supported cutting thousands of teachers, increasing class sizes across the state.”

FACT: This claim is FALSE. Charles Djou supports keeping teachers’ jobs and smaller class sizes. The DCCC does not show any evidence to substantiate this claim. In fact, according to Djou’s campaign website, “We need a reformed education system that puts children first. … Principals in turn must have the resources they need, including adequate funding and the ability to remove underperforming teachers. The cost of the Educational bureaucracies must be reduced to insure that education dollars are spent in the classroom and teachers have the tools they need to educate our children, including continuing teacher education and training. That’s how good school systems work. We cannot continue to limit our children’s potential in school systems that don’t teach.” (http:// www.djou.com/notes/Issues)
