Ige, Caldwell in Arizona for Rail Meetings

Mayor Kirk Caldwell will be leaving O‘ahu early Friday morning for a business trip to Phoenix, Arizona and Chicago, Illinois. Mayor Caldwell will be joined by Gov. David Ige in Phoenix where they will meet with U.S. Department of Transportation officials about Honolulu’s rail project.

From there Mayor Caldwell will travel to Chicago to take part in the North American Climate Summit on December 4 and 5 with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and over 50 other mayors from across North America. Mayor Caldwell will be joined in Chicago by Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency Executive Director Joshua Stanbro, who also serves as the city’s chief resilience officer.

During the Summit, the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards will be granted to five cities that have demonstrated outstanding climate action leadership. Additionally, a network of cities that have pledged to uphold the Paris Climate Agreement will consolidate their commitments in a shared signing ceremony, while also working toward joint metrics to track the progress of initiatives to combat climate change. Mayor Caldwell will address the Forum on Cities, Technology, and Climate on Monday December 4 and the Metropolitan Planning Council on December 6 to describe Honolulu’s focus in addressing global climate change and the development of a clean energy economy.

Mayor Caldwell is scheduled to return to O‘ahu on Wednesday, December 6. During his absence Managing Director Roy K. Amemiya Jr. will serve as acting mayor.

GOVERNOR IGE TO MEET WITH WESTERN GOVERNORS, CABINET MEMBERS IN ARIZONA

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige is in Phoenix, Arizona to attend the Western Governors’ Association’s (WGA) winter meeting. The governor, who serves as WGA vice chair, will engage in discussions on a variety of issues that range from workforce development to preparing infrastructure for natural disasters.

Gov. Ige will also participate in discussions with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao. The meetings will give the governor an opportunity to make the secretaries aware of the impact that various proposed legislation would have on Hawai‘i and other states.

In addition, the governor and members of his administration will travel to New York and San Francisco for meetings with Fitch Ratings, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s, in their continued effort to improve Hawai‘i’s financial ratings, lowering interest rates and saving taxpayer dollars.

The governor will be accompanied by First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige for the WGA portion of the trip. The cost of the governor’s trip is about $2,600. The first lady’s travel expenses will be covered with personal funds.

Gov. Ige is scheduled to return to Honolulu on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui will serve as acting governor.
