UPDATE July 20, 2018: Waiki Dead in South Point Shootout

HTH: Cop killer dead: ‘Nightmare’ ends with South Point shootout; another officer injured

A wild chase and 2 arrests, but no sign of suspect in officer's fatal shooting

HNN:  …A police pursuit dialed up about 6 p.m. Thursday, when residents in Honaunau say they saw officers chasing a fleeing driver, who was firing at police cars following him. It was believed that Waiki was in the truck, but that was never confirmed.

Police said they initially approached the vehicle — with a man and woman inside — parked on Makolea Street, before it drove toward one of the officers. The officer then shot at the vehicle three times, but it fled the area.

Police continued to pursue the truck southbound through the residential neighborhood. An officer fired 10 shots at the truck, but it continued driving toward Middle Keei Road.

Officers eventually found the truck abandoned in a private coffee field.

The two occupants fled on foot into lava fields and thick brush, but were captured and arrested.

They were identified as 25-year-old Harvey Damo Jr., and 25-year-old Shevylyn Klaus, both of Hilo. They face second-degree theft charges.

Checks of the vehicle revealed that it displayed stolen license places and that it was reported stolen earlier in the day from Hilo.

Damo was treated at the Kona Community Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and has been released back into police custody.

Police sources say they are both friends of the suspect, Justin Waiki, who was nowhere to be found….

Soft on Crime: Alleged Cop Killer has 13-year Rap Sheet—Never Did Any Real Time

HNN: …Waiki's first felony conviction was in 2005 when he was just 21 years old — for forgery.

Judge Glenn Hara sentenced him to 90 days in jail and home detention after refusing to give him a second chance. The judge told him he "has a gross disregard for authority. He does not give a rip, he is going to do what he wants to do."

Waiki served five years of probation.

In 2013. he was caught with meth and a loaded gun. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in jail and four years probation.

Then, in November 2017, he broke probation and moved to Las Vegas.

After police brought him back, prosecutors wanted his bail increased. But Judge Henry Nakamoto refused.

Waiki has been a fugitive since missing a court hearing in March…
