Employment Opportunities with the Hawaii State House of Representatives

From Hawaii Legislature

Have you ever been interested in learning the inner workings of State Government? Do you want to help make your State a better place to live and work? Would you like to assist your neighbors when they have questions or concerns and help guide them in resolving issues?

Then there may be a place in the House of Representatives for you.

The Legislature is a fast-paced environment filled with many important deadlines, daily hearings, and long hours. Professionalism is a must, working closely with government officials, business leaders and the public. Working for the House requires a lot of energy and the drive to get the job done and serve the public well.

About Employment at the House of Representatives

Who can apply?

We welcome a very diverse cross section of applicants, ranging from freshly graduated college students to retirees. Minimum requirements are listed for each job, but the main requirement is that you are willing and able to learn the legislative process. We do perform background checks, and a criminal history may disqualify you from employment with the House. We strive for a safe environment for all Capitol employees and visitors.

How do I apply?

Email your resume and cover letter to resume@capitol.hawaii.gov, indicating position(s) desired. Please submit your resume only ONCE. If you would like to apply for more than one position, indicate all positions desired on your cover letter. All resumes submitted will be available for review by the different Representatives and Agency Offices.

Do I need a college degree?

For most positions, no degree is required, but is often helpful.

What are the job requirements?

Please see the individual jobs in the sidebar for a list of requirements.

When are positions available?

Session staff positions are TEMPORARY and generally run from December/January until May. Hiring for session staff generally happens in November and December.

Where are you located?

All positions are based out of the State Capitol Building, which is located in downtown Honolulu. See Map

Where do I park?

We have limited metered parking available for the general public. Parking is accessible through the Miller Street entrance off of Punchbowl Street. Staff may apply for parking passes on a first-come first-served basis.

What benefits do you offer?

Health, Prescription Drug, Dental and Vision insurance is available.

I recently submitted my resume. When will I receive a response?

Your application/resume will be kept on file in the House Chief Clerk’s Office for review by House members and legislative agencies. If interested, the Members or staff themselves may call you to set an appointment for an interview. Applications are kept on file for the duration of the legislative session until the end of May. If you applied for the previous year, you will need to re-submit your resume.

Are there any permanent positions available?

A majority of the positions in the House are on a temporary, session-only basis. Any permanent staff positions will be posted if available.

What are the hours?

Work schedules vary by office, but generally run from 8 – 5. Please be aware, however, that the Legislature has a dynamic work environment, and hours can be significantly longer during deadline periods.

Can I apply with a specific office?

If you are interested in working for a specific Representative or Agency Office, you may email them your resume directly.

How much do you pay?

Salary ranges depend on position and experience. For detailed salary information, please see individual jobs in the sidebar.

Do you have part-time positions?

A majority of positions in the House are full-time. Depending on office needs, Representatives may hire part-time staff. If you are interested in part-time positions, please indicate so on your cover letter.

Are there volunteer opportunities available?

There are always opportunities available for volunteers. You can contact a Representative directly to volunteer in their office.

Do you offer internships?

Internships may be arranged through the UH Internship Program, or you may work with your professor and individual Representatives.
