Are Hawaii's government finances really so bad? Yes. Find out why

(UPDATE: Oahu event cancelled -- see below)

News Release from Grassroot Institute, August 4, 2021

HONOLULU, Aug. 4, 2021 >>  Hawaii’s finances are in worse shape than our state and county officials would have us believe. But Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO of national watchdog organization Truth in Accounting, has some ideas on how we can turn that around.

Weinberg will be the featured guest at a luncheon on Maui on Thursday, Aug. 19, and a luncheon on Oahu on Friday, Aug. 20. Both sponsored by the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, the Maui event will be at the J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku, and the Oahu event at Cafe Julia in the Honolulu YWCA.

Founded in 2002, the mission of Truth in Accounting is to “educate and empower citizens with understandable, reliable and transparent government financial information.”

It does this by analyzing accounting data from each of the 50 states and 75 most populous cities in the country to produce annual assessments of government finances. Its findings enable it to “cut through politicization and accounting tricks to show the true fiscal condition of each state and city, including the health of pension plans.”

In its most recent Financial State of the States report, Truth in Accounting gave Hawaii an “F” grade.

But there is hope, so long as we know the truth about where we stand and what constructive policy options we have at our disposal.

Please join us for this important presentation, to be moderated by Keli‘i Akina, institute president and CEO.

On Maui, seating starts 12:30 p.m. with the event to start at 1 p.m.

On Oahu, seating starts at 11:30 a.m, with the event to start at noon.

Oahu event featuring Weinberg canceled; Maui event is still on

Sheila Weinberg of Truth in Accounting is still scheduled to appear on Thursday on Maui, but Friday's Oahu event has been canceled

HONOLULU, Aug. 17, 2021 >> The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii's first in-person event on Maui since February 2020, scheduled for this Thursday, Aug. 19, and featuring Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting, is still a go.

Unfortunately, our event scheduled for Friday on Oahu that also was to feature Weinberg has been canceled, due to Honolulu County's ever-changing and totally unpredictable restrictions related to concerns about the coronavirus.

Anyone who purchased tickets for Weinberg's Oahu luncheon presentation will receive a refund, along with our deepest regrets for any inconvenience this might have caused.

At her Maui appearance, Weinberg is going to talk about the real state of Maui County's finances, which, as you can imagine, are in pretty bad shape.

The event will be at the J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku, with seating to start at 12:30 p.m. and the one-hour luncheon presentation to begin at 1 p.m.

Seating is still available, so please feel free to invite friends or colleagues to join you for this highly anticipated occasion.

Keli‘i Akina, Grassroot Institute of Hawaii president, will moderate.
