Amata Updates U.S. Aid Efforts Following Tonga Volcanic Eruption and Tsunami

News Release from Office of Rep Aumua Amata, R-AS, Jan 18, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata requested information from the U.S. government Tuesday on the status of U.S. participation in aid efforts for the Kingdom of Tonga, which was devastated this weekend by volcanic ash and tsunami waves, with unknown loss of life, major damages, and an outage of the undersea cable communications services.

“Tonga has major needs for international assistance, and the U.S. is moving to support efforts by Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific region nations to provide help to the people of Tonga,” Congresswoman Amata said. “An initial grant of $100,000 in USAID funds has been approved, focused on the most immediate needs of emergency shelter and drinking water. A U.S. Navy vessel is also in the region at readiness for any lifesaving response effort that might be needed.”

“I spoke with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Tony Greubel in Fiji, who served for years in Samoa,” Amata continued. “He officially declared the disaster on January 16th so the U.S. could respond. I want to wish him, the staff there, and any emergency personnel responding all the best from American Samoa as they are likely to be working around the clock in the days ahead.”

On Tuesday, the State Department helpfully provided Congresswoman Amata’s office with the following update:

  • USAID is providing $100,000 in International Disaster Assistance (IDA) funding to support immediate relief needs of populations affected by the volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga. USAID plans to publicly announce the funding – which will be used to address emergency shelter needs and provide safe drinking water, hygiene kits, and other relief commodities to help affected populations – through a forthcoming press release.
  • Through existing programs, USAID partners were already providing assistance to the people of Tonga. Catholic Relief Services, through their local partner Caritas Tonga, has pre-positioned 1,000 hygiene kits in affected areas for distribution. CARE, through their local partner Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovation Tonga Trust, has also pre-positioned hygiene kits. USAID partner Act for Peace maintains water bladders and pumps in Tonga to meet WASH needs. Previously, USAID provided more than $1 million to Act for Peace to provide community-based disaster risk reduction assistance in 27 remote communities across Tonga, aiming to benefit approximately 9,000 people through May 2022.
  • On January 14, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted, generating an ash plume reaching up to 60,000 feet high across an area approximately 250 miles wide, producing fast-moving currents of hot gas, rock, and ashfall. The volcano is part of the highly active Tonga–Kermadec Islands volcanic arc, which extends from New Zealand to northeastern Fiji. On January 15, the volcano erupted a second time. The second eruption was significantly stronger than the first, with force equivalent to a magnitude 5.8 earthquake at a depth of zero miles.  The second eruption generated tsunami waves of up to four feet, inundating Tongan islands and affecting more than 100,000 people, according to the Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS).
  • No deaths or injuries are reported at this time by the Government of Tonga, but full impacts remain largely unknown due to ongoing power and communication outages. Flooding has likely damaged or destroyed houses and other public infrastructure, as well as exacerbated the transmission risk of vector and waterborne disease.
  • USAID/BHA staff in Bangkok, Thailand; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Washington, D.C., are monitoring and assessing the situation to determine whether additional support is needed.

USAID and the U.S. Department of Defense are spearheading U.S. participation in the international relief efforts, and the State Department is working with the Tongan Ambassador to the United States. Congresswoman Amata appreciates all this information from officials, on behalf of people all over the Pacific region who are watching the news closely out of concern for the Tongan people. Amata has requested ongoing updates with in-depth information and details. “I am encouraged that U.S. efforts are underway, and I will do my best to keep you informed,” concluded Amata.
