U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, City & County of Honolulu requesting community input on alternative plans developed for the Ala Wai Flood Risk Management General Reevaluation Study

  • Tuesday, July 26, 5:30-8:30 p.m. (virtual)
  • Thursday, July 28, 5:30-8:30 p.m. (Ala Wai Golf Course ballroom)

News Release from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in partnership with the City & County of Honolulu (CCH), will hold two public workshops to gather feedback and input on an initial array of preliminary alternative plans developed for the Ala Wai Flood Risk Management General Reevaluation (GR) Study. The workshops will present results of the study process to-date, present an initial array of alternative plans, and gather community input and feedback on the alternative plans presented.

The July 26 & 28 workshops will provide the public an opportunity to discuss and provide input on an initial array of alternative flood risk management plans, prior to the development of the final array of alternatives plan and selection of a recommended plan. Each alternative comprises a suite of management measures that work together to manage flood risk. A preview of these alternatives in the form of a tracking spreadsheet is available at www.honolulu.gov/AlaWai.

In November 2021, the first round of community meetings introduced the GR study; gathered initial input and ideas from the community; and included an interactive workshop to brainstorm potential solutions and identify concerns in the study area. In January 2022, the study team presented a revised public engagement and communications strategy that included additional virtual public meetings and enhanced online engagement opportunities. In April 2022, a series of workshops were held to discuss the development and screening of flood risk management measures throughout the watershed.

In November 2022, the public will have an opportunity to provide formal comments on the draft report and tentatively selected plan. After completion of the final report in Spring 2023, there will be another opportunity for the public to discuss and provide feedback on the final recommendation by USACE. In addition to the public meetings and workshops, the public can engage the study team via several online mechanisms available 24/7. Interested parties can submit comments via a fillable comment form on the project website (www.honolulu.gov/alawai/contact) as well as by sending an email directly to AlaWai@honolulu.gov.

Additional information is available at www.honolulu.gov/AlaWai regarding the study, the public engagement plan, communication tools, and the management measures and alternative plans under consideration.
