News Release from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Sep. 13, 2011

The Mānoa campus of the University of Hawai‘i is again ranked among the “Best National Universities” in the 2012 edition of the “Best Colleges” guidebook published today by U.S. News and World Report. It is also ranked among the top U.S. universities as an “A-Plus School for B Students”- which “truly seek a broad, engaged student body” and “where non-superstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving.”

UH Mānoa also ranked in the top tier of national universities with campus ethnic diversity, identified as a college “where students are most likely to encounter undergraduates different from themselves.”

Out of 280 higher education institutions, UH’s flagship campus at Mānoa ranks 164th. Among the factors weighed as measures of academic quality are undergraduate academic reputation, graduate and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate performance.

“We are pleased to be recognized for having a ‘broad, engaged student body,’ but we also know that such published rankings don't provide a full view of the unique multicultural global experience in a Hawaiian place of learning that UH Mānoa provides. Such rankings should be regarded by potential students as just one of many tools in assessing UH Mānoa as a great fit for their learning experience, so we encourage students and families to become familiar with our academic offerings, campus environment, and student success programs," said Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw.

Shidler College of Business ranked in the top 25 percent of the U.S. News and World Report ranking of “Best Undergraduate Business Programs” and the College’s undergraduate program in International Business ranked 12th. U.S. News also ranked Shidler’s MBA programs in the top 25% overall for 2012.

"I am pleased to announce that we have moved up from 15th to 12th in the U.S. News ranking of International Business programs, tied with the Foster School at the University of Washington. For the second straight year we have appeared in the overall U.S. News undergraduate business school rankings. This year, we ranked 115th out of 486 AACSB accredited business schools in the U.S.,” said Shidler College of Business Dean Vance Roley.

The 2012 edition of the Best Colleges guidebook is scheduled to appear on newsstands September 20. For more information, visit: www.usnews.com/colleges.

UH Mānoa is also included in the updated “Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012,” compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske. The Fiske Guide is designed to give a selective, subjective and systematic look at 300-plus colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. “UH offers bachelor’s degrees in nearly 90 fields. Among the best are astronomy, Asian and Pacific area studies, languages and the arts, ethnomusicology, and tropical agriculture. It should come as no surprise that marine and ocean-related programs are also first-rate,” says its description.
