About the Film:

Directed by Burt Takeuchi, USA, 2010, 85 mins.
This screening is organized in conjunction with the 70th Anniversary Reunion of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

Comprising more than 35 interviews with Japanese-American veterans who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, Valor With Honor tells the amazing story of a small segregated band of 3,500 soldiers that became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. By the end of the war, the 442nd would be awarded seven Presidential Unit Citations, 21 Medals of Honor, and more than 500 Silver Stars and 9,000 Purple Hearts. Through vivid firsthand accounts, rare photos, reenactment and combat footage, Valor with Honor recounts the harrowing stories of 442nd’s battles in Italy, the Lost Battalion Rescue in France, the assault on Mount Folgorito, and its role in the liberation of Jewish prisoners at Dachau.

This year marks a milestone in the history of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Ceremonies in Honolulu, March 22-24, will celebrate the unit’s 70th Anniversary Reunion.

On view at Bishop Museum March 9-April 14 is the exhibition American Heroes: Japanese American WWII Nisei Soldiers and the Congressional l Gold Medal. The medal was awarded in 2011 to Japanese-American World War II veterans in recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments.

Special guest: Director Burt Takeuchi

Born in Los Angeles, filmmaker Burt Takeuchi graduated from San Jose State University in 1995 with a degree in biology. After working as an extra on films such as Memoirs of a Geisha and The Pursuit of Happyness, and studying the role of Asian Americans in the military for more than 20 years, Takeuchi became interested in combining these passions to preserve the oral histories of Nisei veterans. Valor with Honor is Takeuchi’s first film production and took seven years to make. His upcoming projects include a dramatic film on the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and a documentary project on the battle for redress and reparations for Japanese Americans sent to concentration camps during World War II.
