Christians across the country are increasingly becoming targets because of their "intolerance."  In Hawaii, it is already happening and it could get worse....

HB 411 HD2 and SB 1109 SD2.  HFF, HCC and HFA all testified in opposition to the bills because no conscience provisions are included.... 

Both bills state in the preamble that the emergency contraceptive "is not an abortion pill" and "is not an abortifacient." That seemingly simple, and untrue statement, nullifies any protection that a federal conscience exemption might have provided....

The hearing was full of people who are against religious freedom.  One individual even stated that if Christians have a problem with it, they shouldn’t work in an emergency room....

On Monday, the State House Tourism Committee “deferred” HB 2788. If passed, this bill would grant a twenty-year license for one stand-alone casino in Waikiki not in a hotel....

On Monday, the House Tourism Committee will hear HB 2788 (Relating to Gaming) that grants a twenty-year license for one stand-alone casino in Waikiki (not in a hotel). This problematic bill also establishes the Hawaii Gaming Control Commission.

...we noticed a very strong change in the legislature this year towards religious entities. Comments directed at Hawaii Family Forum, and other religious organizations, were negative. Pro‐family supporters walked away from several hearings disheartened at the way legislators allowed, and in some cases perpetuated, back‐ended derogatory comments about religious institutions. We have never before seen this type of discrimination at the capitol....

The Senate had rejected requests for a "healthcare right of conscience" exception for SB 218 (Emergency Contraceptive) and passed the bill 22 to 3.  We are grateful to Senators Gabbard, Kochi and Slom for standing courageously to oppose SB218.  The bill has been referred to the House Health and Judiciary Committee for hearing.

Today, SB 232 HD1, Relating to Civil Unions, passed the House by a vote of 31-19 (with one excused - Rep. Cabanilla).   That means that the bill will now go back to the Senate for reconsideration.  It is expected that the Senate may accept the changes made by the House Judiciary.  If that happens, the bill could end up on Governor Abercrombie’s desk for signature as early as next week.  The Governor has publicly stated he would sign the bill.

If SB 232 SD1 HD1 (civil unions) passes the House, it will then go over to the Senate and they will have to agree to the changes. If they do not agree, the bill will go to a conference committee with members from both chambers so they can work out their differences. What you may not know, is only members who VOTED IN SUPPORT SB 232 can be appointed to the conference committee. In conference committee, no input from the public is accepted.

If the Senate agrees to the amendments, the bill could go straight to the Governor who has publicly stated he would sign the bill.

The civil unions bill (SB 232) was passed in the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 11 (yes) to 2 (no) while 3 were excused.

After Senator Josh Green stated that public sentiment was overwhelmingly opposed to the issue, he made a motion to hold the bill in committee.

The bill will now crossover from the Senate to the House.  We are anticipating the bill will be heard in the House Judiciary committee and will let you know once the hearing is scheduled.

The Senate Judiciary committee voted today 3 to 2 to pass the civil unions bill (SB 232) out of committee.  The bill will now move to the full Senate for a vote.  The vote in committee today was as follows:
