Hawaii Democratic Presidential Caucus Date Changed to Help Clinton beat Sanders

ILind: Apparently the change in the date for the Democratic presidential poll to Saturday March 26, part of the Democrat’s precinct caucuses, was anything but routine, according to a very interesting analysis in a comment posted on the website, TalkLeft.com.

“Our state’s caucuses are also being held on a Saturday afternoon for the very first time, thanks to the deal cut between DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz and our own State Chair Stephanie Ohigashi, upon a promise that Hawaii would receive 10 extra delegate slots for our national convention.

“Ohigashi presented the party with what amounts to a fait accompli at the meeting of the State Central Committee (SCC) last month, and I can tell you, party members from across the islands — myself included — are downright livid with her, particularly since we’ve further learned since that meeting that DWS then reneged on her end of the bargain, and Hawaii will be receiving only three additional delegate slots instead of the ten that were promised.

“Ohigashi was told to her face by members at that SCC meeting that she had absolutely no right to enter into any such negotiations with the DNC, without first consulting with the SCC and obtaining its prior concurrence for the date shift. Her attitude was blasé at best, literally telling us, ‘Well, what’s done is done.’” ….

Rewarding Failure: NCAA Bans UH, UH Compliance Director Gets a Promotion, Gib Arnold Gets $700K

SA: The NCAA placed blame both on the UH coaching staff and the athletic department’s compliance office, noting the relationship was nearly dysfunctional and lacked communication.

Matlin has since promoted the compliance director at the time, Amanda Paterson, to assistant athletic director, noting (claiming) her issue with Arnold was an “anomaly.”

(Quick IQ Test: Do you go along with this?)

We would expect that at the very least, compliance administrators will work more closely with coaches and the rest of the athletics department staff to ensure the NCAA’s new rules are understood and followed.

(Translation: They are totally incompetent but that’s OK—after all, how often does a program get sanctioned?)

Arnold’s contract, of course, was terminated in October 2014 without cause and he was paid $700,000 under a settlement….

Leader of almost 260 meth addicts wants to lease Waianae site for Homeless Tent City

SA: A leader in the encampment situated on about 19 acres of preservation-zoned state land between Waianae High School and the boat harbor, Borge is looking into forming a nonprofit to help generate funding for her “houseless” meth community known as Puuhonua O Waianae Village….

Also, Borge is making inquiries about leasing the wooded land on which the encampment sits. In addition to homeless single adults, the community includes about 15 families with children ranging in age from babies to high-schoolers, as well as about 140 dogs. She estimates that all but about 20 people there are of Hawaiian descent.

The leasing concept could be similar to that in place for Puuhonua O Waimanalo or “Refuge of Waimanalo,” a community established in the mid-1990s by Hawaiian activist (and convicted felon) Dennis “Bumpy” Kanahele’s Nation of Hawaii….

Regarding leasing the land, Morishige said: “The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness generally do not support safe zones as a best practice. But I think that we want to make sure that we fully understand what the community is proposing and that’s why it’s important that we have the community dialogue.” …

About two months ago, the city proposed building modular housing for homeless families on a 1.1-acre site near Waianae High School, next to Maluhia Lutheran Church on Farrington Highway. The idea drew criticism from some residents who maintain that such housing is not a good fit for the community and the property. Borge said she loved the idea, but expressed concern about possible flooding on the property. She suggested that money should be first invested in existing resources, such as outreach programs and standing shelters….

How Can We Get our ‘Medical’ Dope onto Airlines?

CB: …According to Sen. Will Espero, Senate vice president and a member of the committee holding the hearing, here are a few of the ideas most likely to be up for discussion:

First, allowing sales on Sundays. Medicine is medicine. There shouldn’t be a modern-day “blue law” banning medical marijuana sales on Sundays, as the current law and rules do. For the most part, lawmakers and state officials have avoided conflating marijuana’s medical and recreational uses; they should do so in this case, too, for the sake of patients.

Second, transportation between our islands. Currently, the law forbids transporting medical marijuana between islands. But what if a dispensary’s grow operation is wiped out through disease or human error — shouldn’t that business be able to buy and transport product from a neighbor island’s grow operation to serve patients without fear of reprisal?

And shouldn’t patients, who might live on one island but be receiving medical treatment or need to visit family on other islands, be able to engage in inter-island travel with both their medicine and peace of mind?

Even more problematically, if both Maui County dispensaries are located on Maui, there would be no dispensary for the more than 7,000 residents of the island of Molokai. Under the current law, there would be no legal way for patients there to get medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary and bring it home.

Wind Schemers Chased off of North Shore, Focus on Waikiki for Offshore Wind Facility

IM: “After conducting more than 100 stakeholder meetings since 2012 with more than 50 policy, environmental, community, Native Hawaiian, industry, regulatory, and military stakeholders, we have learned that of the five sites with which we originally started, we are very pleased that one site has both the strongest economics and is supported by a wide group of stakeholders.”

“We’ve responded to feedback to the other sites we investigated on the North Shore and in the Kaiwi Channel and, based on visual, Native Hawaiian, environmental, recreational and commercial concerns, are no longer pursuing them.”

Progression Hawaii Offshore Wind, Inc. has a video for a similar floating wind facility located 3.6 miles from shore

Principle Power produced a video of a similar floating wind facility. The facility in the video is six miles closer to the shore.
