Flashback:

What land in Hawaii is not held sacred?

SA: …Tell us, what part of Mauna Kea is much more significantly sacred than any other so-labeled “sacred place?”

If you are a Native Hawaiian, take a good look at all of Hawaii and not just Mauna Kea. It is no more sacred than any other land in Hawaii. Is the land you live on sacred? Look at Kakaako and Waikiki, where numerous bodies were buried, dug up, and relocated.

I am a Native Hawaiian who attends school on the mainland, and the TMT protesters do not speak for me. This issue is about individual selfish attitudes, plain and simple….

Caldwell’s Homeless Point-Man Quits

SA: …“I’ve decided that the time is right to begin my next chapter in life,” Nakata’s statement said. “I can look back at the accomplishments of the Department of Community Services ohana over the last four and a half years and the thousands of lives that we touched and know that the department is on a positive trajectory.”

The Department of Community Services handles a variety of housing, workforce and human services functions. In recent years the department has been under constant pressure to relieve the island’s affordable-housing crunch and help reduce homelessness.

Last week the city auditor issued a report stating that Community Services’ Section 8 Tenant-Based Assistance Program is meeting its federal requirements but deficient in several key areas…..

Airport basement leak Becomes Excuse to Give Oceanit $500K

SA: …The state Department of Transportation recently approved a contract with engineering company Oceanit Laboratories Inc. for $500,000 to locate the source of the water leaking into the basement of the overseas terminal and international arrivals building, and figure out a way to stop it.

The contract does not include the task of actually fixing the leak, which will cost extra, said Tim Sakahara, spokesman for the department.

The basement of the airport has been leaking for years — probably more than 10 years….

HB1079: More Useless Expensive Regulations for Hawaii

CB: Post-secondary educational institutions in Hawaii — that is, colleges and universities — seeking accreditation now have to post a surety bond, which is a three-party legally binding agreement between an obligee, a principal and a surety bonds company.

The purpose of the bonding is to serve as protection for students in the state. If their post-secondary school fails to meet its legal obligations, they can get reimbursed for paid tuitions.

Hawaii House Bill 1079, which was introduced by the Ige administration in the 2017 State Legislature, introduces the new requirements in the accreditation process. The new rules came into force on July 1….

Maui hospital raises fee but retreats after moms protest

SA:  Rachell and Jon MacDougall’s joy in welcoming their newborn daughter Juliana on July 12 was dampened when the first-time father was asked to leave Maui Memorial Medical Center or pay $672 for a private room.

The hospital raised the price for a private room to $672 from $152 on July 1….

During the transition to Kaiser, the company said it provided more than 700 support staff to help with training and new systems, including electronic medical records that allow providers to simultaneously view patient data in real time for better care coordination and patient safety.

The state’s largest health maintenance organization said it has also installed other back-end systems for finance, procurement and time management.

“Thirty days into the transition, we are focusing on making sure staff have the training on the new operating systems,” Ely said, adding that 97 percent of 1,500 former staff members accepted positions with Kaiser.

The company also hired 58 new registered nurses to support patient care, and 79 staff for administration, facilities, food services and other areas. However, there are 245 open positions that still need to be filled, she said…..
