SB: Djou closes gap on rivals

The poll, conducted by the Maryland-based firm Research 2000 for the website Daily Kos, showed Djou with 32 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for Ed Case and 27 percent for Colleen Hanabusa.

Djou's lead falls within the 4.5 percent margin of error , making it a statistical tie. The telephone poll of 500 likely voters in the district was conducted April 11-14.

"While I'm excited about the clear momentum our campaign is building, as reflected in this poll, the only poll that counts is the one by the voters," Djou said in an e-mail message.

ADV: Tight race for seat in Congress

Several private polls have shown that the race is contracting, with Case and Djou alternating in front and Hanabusa trailing slightly. The Daily Kos poll is the first poll publicly released since a January survey sponsored by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and KITV, which had Case comfortably in the lead.

The poll results likely will fuel concern among national and local Democrats that Case and Hanabusa will split the Democratic vote and hand the special election to Djou, a Republican.

Hawaii gas prices about to get pushed up by added taxes

At the age of 79, Ilse Hardy may give up her beloved Mercedes 300SE for TheBus, (exactly what the enviros want) after legislators this week approved a bump in the state tax on petroleum products and the Honolulu City Council considered raising the county gas tax by 3 cents per gallon.  "This is terrible," Hardy said after paying $24 for seven gallons of gas. "It's a shame. We already have the most expensive gas prices in the nation."

SB: Lingle resists parents' Furlough Friday plan

The parents' groups Save Our Schools and Hawaii Education Matters announced a plan yesterday to restore 15 lost school days through March 23, 2011, and costs $55 million.

Their plan effectively supports the position of the state Board of Education and Hawaii State Teachers Association in bringing back all educational workers, not just teachers and "essential" staff.

ADV: Hawaii parent groups propose compromise on school furloughs

While the two parent groups celebrated their proposal as a potential end to furloughs, in reality the plan represented little more than a feel-good gesture, considering that Hawaii Education Matters and Save Our Schools Hawaii are not part of the collective bargaining process.

Lingle said yesterday the plan misses the mark by leaving six furlough days unresolved. And state Board of Education Chairman Garrett Toguchi said the parents' plan can't be taken to the union, since the BOE and Hawaii State Teachers Association have already reached a legally binding supplemental agreement to eliminate furloughs.

HSTA boss Okabe says: “With regard to implementation, we are on the same page as the parents….”

HFP: Aiona endorses $55M furlough elimination plan

“On Tuesday, I met with leaders of the parent group Hawai`i Education Matters, and they presented a tentative plan to me as well as the HSTA that I carefully reviewed and endorsed….

Instead of pursuing the plan we discussed, the group chose instead to announce a different plan on Friday that I cannot support because it would leave the furlough situation unresolved and incomplete."

Proposed Hawaii law would prevent gun seizures during emergencies (passes Senate 21-0)

It gained momentum after February's tsunami warning, when lawmakers said their constituents asked if their weapons could be taken in an emergency situation.

Gun-rights activists have pursued this kind of law since Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans police confiscated guns in an attempt to restore order.

The bill now advances to Governor Linda Lingle.

He's seen some homeless leave Waikiki because of the ban

"We're out here once a week, trying to get them into housing, mental health services, other services. But in the end it's definitely up to them. We're just a stepping stone," he said.

Darlene Heim works at the Center's drop-in site in Kaimuki.

She said although the new laws have driven some homeless indoors, it's just part of the solution.

UHWO nears deadline on campus project: West Oahu plans could hinge on bond financing

The University of Hawai'i is getting uncomfortably close to a Dec. 31, 2011, deadline for construction to begin on instructional facilities at its much-delayed West O'ahu campus.  Failing to meet the deadline would prompt ownership of the land to revert to the James Campbell Co., formerly known as Campbell Estate, which gave the university 500 acres on the 'Ewa Plain with the condition that work begin on facilities serving at least 2,750 students by the end of next year.

Big Island hotel workers vote to strike

More than three-fourths (76 percent) of the unionized workers at the Royal Kona Resort on the Big Island have voted to strike, according to the hotel workers’ union, UniteHere! Local 5.

The vote does not necessarily mean a strike is imminent, but it authorizes union leadership to call a strike.

The union contract covering 145 workers at the 436-room resort expired in June 2007.

The hotel’s owner, the Hogan Family’s Hawaiian Hotels & Resorts, terminated the union contract in January 2009.

(Thanks to Local 5, Mr Kim Coco Iwamoto is on the School Board.)

'Green' building code raising concerns ahead of vote to delay implementation

For local architect Shaun Roth, of Roth Kimura Architects, the county's amended version of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code removed two important conditions.
