Cayetano Endorses Hanabusa for Governor

SA: …Former Gov. John Waihee is headlining a campaign fundraiser for Ige on Nov. 2, while former Gov. Ben Cayetano is emerging as an outspoken supporter of Hanabusa.

Former Gov. George Ariyoshi is reportedly unhappy with Ige and leaning toward backing Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho for governor, but Carvalho has not announced whether he will actually run….

Burris said. “If Cayetano goes one way and Ariyoshi goes another way and Waihee goes a third way, there’s no monolith there. … It means that getting a pat on the head from a previous governor doesn’t mean that much.”….

“I don’t think Ige controls many people, and I don’t think Ariyoshi controls many people, and I don’t think Cayetano controls many people, so I don’t think their influence is nearly as useful as it would have been back when there was a more organized political — for want of a better word — machine,” Burris said….

Cayetano said he considers Ige to be a friend and an honest man, but “I believe Colleen has the leadership style and qualities needed to lead Hawaii through what I believe will be very difficult times.”

Ige had his chance to show what he can do, but has not done enough to increase the supply of affordable housing, Cayetano said. He also maintains Ige should have taken steps to prepare for what Cayetano believes are inevitable further construction cost overruns on the city’s rail project.

“Ariyoshi and I campaigned very hard for David Ige against Neil Abercrombie,” Cayetano said. “We went to the neighbor islands for him and all that, and so I think that it’s not unreasonable for … me to have certain expectations of leadership on his part, especially since the state is entering a really troubled era.”…

“One of the bad things that happens when we encourage these kinds of musical chairs is that we end up losing good people, one way or the other,” Waihee said.  (B-bye Hanabusa.)

Council has plenty more vices in its long reach

Cataluna: …The City Council should look at banning the consumption of fast food in cars when children are present. All that fat and salt and sugar. Fast food should be eaten only in transit when walking or biking so that the bad stuff can be burned right off and there’s a net zero. But not in a crosswalk. Fries in a crosswalk should be banned. Too distracting. No chicken nuggets in a crosswalk, either, especially when dipping sauce is involved. No dipping sauce at all during transit unless it’s hands-free….

Hawaii could face the same winds of scorn that hit Puerto Rico

Shapiro:  …Trump amped up his ire on Thursday, declaring that Puerto Rico was a disaster before Maria because of its debt and crumbling infrastructure.

He threatened to abandon the island in its humanitarian crisis by pulling federal troops and relief workers and putting caps on recovery funds that weren’t placed on Texas and Florida after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma….

If a hurricane hits here, would you bet on Hawaii getting the Texas treatment or the Puerto Rico treatment?….

(On the other hand, numerous State Democrats are arguing that Hawaii should do nothing to prepare for disasters.  See next article.)

Borreca: Hawaii Really Shouldn’t Bother With Disaster Preparedness

Borreca: …In some ways, there is a sense of grim futility to the exercise.

The “frequently asked questions” section of the state report addresses the question of why even worry since we will all be blown up anyway despite nuclear preparations — but somehow the state is discounting the damage.

“Current estimates of human casualties based on the size (yield) of North Korean nuclear weapon technology strongly suggests an explosion less than 6 miles in diameter.

“More than 90% of the population would survive the direct effects of such an explosion,” the state report says.

Ninety percent alive means 10 percent, or about 100,000, dead immediately. That is beyond staggering.

Also, a 6-mile diameter blast centered on Pearl Harbor means that areas that would be blown off the map would include: Pearl City, Aiea, Waimalu, Salt Lake, Halawa, Pearlridge center, Waipio, Waikele, Waipahu, West Loch, Ewa Villages, Ewa Beach, Hickam, Honolulu Airport, Kalihi-Palama and the Sand Island Treatment Center.

Also gone would be Pali Momi Medical Center and Tripler Army Medical Center.

Given that the warning time if the North Koreans fired an ICBM at Honolulu would be “less than 12 to 15 minutes before missile impact,” according to the state warning, the only option is “shelter in place.”

There is also some nightmarish speculation from the state about where a missile might land; for instance, would the neighbor islands be safe?

“We do not know. North Korean missile technology may not be adequately advanced to accurately target a specific island or location. Although most analysts believe the desired target will be Oahu given the concentration of military and government facilities, a missile may stray and impact the open ocean or even a neighbor island,” the state says….

Hawaii investors least interested in cryptocurrencies

VB: …Hawaii is the state with the least interest in cryptocurrency; it has also taken quite an unfriendly stance towards digital currencies. Coinbase, a bitcoin and ethereum exchange, ceased supporting its customers in Hawaii due to what it called “impractical regulatory policies”, and Hawaiians were forced to close their accounts. Of the state’s 17,755 users just 325 were interested in cryptocurrency (1.8 percent)….
