Charity shake-down artist Mike “pay-for-play” Magaoay will run for Wahiawa-North Shore state Senate seat

Magaoay's decision creates an opening for Republicans. Gil Riviere, a mortgage broker and leader of Keep the North Shore Country, ran a competitive GOP campaign against Magaoay in 2008 and will have a solid chance of capturing the open seat. Larry Sagaysay -- an aide to Magaoay -- and Maria Pacheco and Tammy Escorzon are the Democrats who have shown interest in the House seat.

(No other candidates have pulled papers for SD22)

Magaoay exposed shaking down charities for campaign contributions, December, 2007:

Alleged gay rape: Prosecutors will challenge appellate court reversal of murder verdict

In a unanimous decision Tuesday, a three-judge panel of the Intermediate Court of Appeals overturned the conviction of Tyler Condon in the stabbing of his cousin Jake Ira Hale at an Ewa townhouse in 2007.

The court held that Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro Jr. made an improper argument to the jury that misstated the law.

SA: Stop bickering over homeless (doing its part for Neil Abercrombie)

Yet the state's latest line -- coming from Gov. Linda Lingle's chief of staff, Barry Fukunaga -- has been completely inappropriate: "It's about time the mayor stepped up," he wrote in a commentary prepared for publication, "even though it's evident that he is only doing so because he is running for governor."

Complaining that the mayor is playing politics leaves Fukunaga open to criticism for doing the very same thing; he took this preemptive shot to marginalize a gesture by the governor's political foe. His zeal would have been better directed at a collaborative search for solutions. So lamentable -- since the Lingle administration has points aplenty to share, having helped launch the Next Step shelter in Kakaako and five shelters along the Leeward Coast since May 2006.

(This editorial exists solely because the Case family’s Star-Advertiser sees an opportunity to boost Neil Abercrombie by going after everybody else.)

Criticisms of telescopes atop Mauna Kea are 10 years out of date (appeals for Sierra Club members to stop attack on telescope)

Contrary to Ho's allegations, these groups include respected environmentalists and Hawaiian cultural practitioners who participate without compensation alongside educators, scientists, commercial users and others to find solutions that serve the common good.

Unfortunately, for the past 10 years, naysayers such as Ho and his Sierra Club committee have chosen not to participate in the process, opting instead to stand on the sidelines and complain about things happening more than 10 years ago.

On the other hand, OMKM has spearheaded a series of important studies on the mountain's natural resources (including multi-year, multi-agency efforts to gather baseline data on the population, habitat and life cycle of the wekiu bug) and the first comprehensive archaeological survey of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve and access road -- studies conducted by experts in their field, with partial funding provided by observatories on Mauna Kea….

Members of the Sierra Club would be well served to look into the role and pronouncements made in their name by Nelson Ho and his supporters, as it directly impacts the credibility of their organization. Meanwhile, there are many of us who choose to be part of the process to find the best path forward.

Gov. Linda Lingle on Wednesday signed the measure called Act 185, KITV reported.

Contractors will now have their licenses suspended or revoked if they knowingly hire a person who is not eligible to work in the U.S. under federal law.

Until now, only contractors running government jobs would face the same penalties.

Maui resident W. S. Merwin to Be Named Poet Laureate of the US

W. S. Merwin acknowledges that his relatively reclusive life on a former pineapple plantation built atop a dormant volcano in Maui, Hawaii, will be disturbed by the Library of Congress’s announcement on Thursday naming him the country’s poet laureate….

During his tenure, Mr. Merwin said, he wants to emphasize his “great sympathy with native people and the languages and literature of native peoples,” and his “lifelong concern with the environment.” (Another person who believes America is the world’s great Satan.  No wonder he got picked.  Isn’t this stuff getting a little passe?)

Although raised in the Western tradition, he said he feels more affinity with an Eastern one, “being part of the universe and everything living.” With that exhilarating connection comes responsibility, however. “You don’t just exploit it and use it and throw it away any more than you would a member of your family,” he said. “You’re not separate from the frog in the pond or the cockroach in the kitchen.”

Lanai residency suit will go to trial

WAILUKU - A lawsuit seeking to remove Lanai Council Member Sol Kaho'ohalahala from office will go to trial next month, after a judge on Wednesday said he would not make an immediate ruling on the case.

Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza said both sides deserved to go to trial, so that all the facts could be presented and weighed. He rejected a motion by 17 Lanai residents seeking summary judgment, or an immediate action to remove Kaho'ohalahala from his seat on the County Council. A trial has been scheduled for the week of Aug. 9.

THAAD: In Space no one can hear you surrender

National Security: The administration is ready to sign a treaty stripping us of our ability to defend ourselves against enemy nuclear missiles, including Iran's and North Korea's. In space, no one can hear you surrender.

On Monday, the ground-based Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, part of the U.S. missile defense shield, successfully shot down a ballistic missile launched from a ship's deck off Kauai, Hawaii. The test simulated an Iranian SCUD launched from the deck of a ship off the U.S. coast, which, if armed with a nuke, could devastate the American heartland…

Yet our disarmer in chief, President Obama, stands ready to strip us naked before our enemies by signing a treaty designed to demilitarize space. Since interceptors such as THAAD are designed to hit their targets on the edge of space and can be modified to kill satellites, such a treaty would effectively ban their use.

'Little Obama': Indonesia Premieres Movie Despite Obama's Absence

About 60 percent of the film is factual, including controversial scenes of Obama riding a bike with a male transgender nanny. But those are facts, Demantra says.

A scene that shows Obama entering a mosque and trying to imitate friends as they prayed did not make it into the final production. But many scenes seem to show how much of who Obama is today was formed during his time in Indonesia.

The relationship Obama has with his Indonesia stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, is a focus of much of the film. And it is Lolo’s stern guidance of Obama that eventually provokes Obama’s mother to send him to live with his grandparents in Hawaii. In the film, he teaches Obama to box so that he can defend himself against bullies. And he takes him out one night to talk about how men needed to be tough and rational – not always kind-hearted, like Obama's mother. (This explains a lot.)
