Felon found guilty in gun-and-drugs case

WAILUKU - A felon with 18 prior convictions has been found guilty of gun and drug charges stemming from his arrest by state enforcement officers in 2006....

"Why was Raymond Foster in a Toyota 4Runner with Philip Malano in one of the most remote parts of Maui at 2 in the morning with guns and drugs?"

Yes, why is someone with 18 convictions out of prison?  Good question.

Lingle's speech to put deficit ideas on table

Current Senate President Colleen Hanabusa says she wants Lingle to commit to keeping state workers on the job, even as the state budget starts to run deficits.

Finally, House Democratic leader Rep. Blake Oshiro said his colleagues are hoping for some direction from Lingle on taxes.

Ferry costs imposed by protesters still climbing

Other DOT costs associated with Hawaii Superferry include security expenses at Nawiliwili and Kahului harbors during the company's ill-fated attempt to launch interisland service in August 2007 amid protests. The ferry made two trips to Maui before being halted by a court order. On Kaua'i, protesters greeted the ferry on its first voyage and stopped the vessel from docking at Nawiliwili a second day.

Irene Bowie, executive director of Maui Tomorrow, one of the groups involved in the legal case, said the DOT list of ferry-related costs shouldn't be considered a comprehensive accounting of taxpayer costs. Missing are such expenses as the cost of convening a special legislative session, public meetings and a state auditor's investigation.

Aerial sheep, goat hunts increase

The first of this year's four planned aerial shoots within the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve is set for Thursday and Friday, said Roger Imoto, Hawaii Island branch manager for the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Forestry and Wildlife Division.  "We were normally shooting twice a year," he said....
