More drug dealers with medical marijuana certs busted on Maui

WAILUKU - Indoor marijuana-growing operations were discovered during recent searches of two Maui residences of people who had medical marijuana permits, law enforcement officials reported Friday. In both cases, officials said the amounts of marijuana seized exceeded the legal limit for medical use.

One search occurred Wednesday when state Narcotics Enforcement Division officers and Maui police vice officers executed a warrant at a residence on Luakaha Circle in Kihei. Investigators discovered a sophisticated indoor growing operation and seized 142 marijuana plants from a residence and an outdoor shed, according to a news release from the state Department of Public Safety.

Processed marijuana, marijuana extracts and drug paraphernalia also were seized, along with the medical use of marijuana certificate of a 32-year-old man identified as the homeowner and person responsible for growing the marijuana.

(That medical marijuana program is pretty good.  Give the police a list and make their job easier.  Meanwhile Rep Joe Bertram (D-Kihei) continues to support his arrested-drug-dealer buddy and advocate state-run marijuana farms.)

Senate restricts ceded land sales--but does not ban

The legislation falls short of a full moratorium on sales of ceded lands that Native Hawaiians had sought. But if enacted, the bill would make it politically difficult for the state to sell or transfer anything more than small portions of the lands until Native Hawaiian claims are settled. The measure now goes to the House.

The move came on a day the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that acting Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler will be allowed to speak on behalf of the state of Hawaii in its ceded land case against the Office of Hawaiian Affairs on Wednesday.

OHA and its supporters had hoped that President Obama's new solicitor general, Elena Kagan, would drop Kneelder's support of the state's position on the case. But at a news conference at Iolani Palace this morning, OHA officials pointed out that Kagan cannot take office until she is confirmed.

BILL MAY DIE IN HOUSE:

But Sen. Sam Slom (R, Diamond Head-Hawaii Kai) said the state should have unlimited right to sell its lands.  "Really, it's a state's rights issue," he said. "For 22 consecutive years now, the executive branch has taken the position that the state has the ability to do these things. Only now are we questioning what can be done."

Sen. Fred Hemmings (R, Lanikai-Waimanalo) said the resolutions do not dovetail with the bill requiring legislative approval of ceded-land sales, which he backed.  "The states should and must have the right to manage their resources," he said.

The measure requiring a legislative OK for ceded-land sales now heads to the House, where similar bills have been blocked by the leadership -- to the consternation of supporters.
