(Editor's note: You have only a few more days to enjoy the pause in the Gramscian War on the cultural and historic foundations of Hawaii Statehood....)

HONOLULU – In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Hawai‘i’s statehood, KITV-4 will air an exclusive documentary, “50 Years of the 50th State,” Friday, August 7 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. The 90-minute documentary traces Hawai‘i’s journey from the pre-statehood era through 2009.

Featuring a combination of historic film footage and images with commentary from a wide array of community members, the documentary also presents a vision for Hawai‘i’s next 50 years.

The production of the documentary was sponsored by the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission.
“50 Years of the 50th State” will re-air on Tuesday, August 18 at 8:30 p.m.

The public is being invited to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hawai‘i statehood by contributing items for a time capsule to be opened on the state’s 75th anniversary in 2034.

Organized by the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission, 50 time capsules will be buried statewide and will contain a treasure trove of memorabilia representing both Hawai‘i’s past and present.  Seven of the capsules have been made available for Hawai‘i residents to contribute memorabilia and will be buried on the grounds of the State Capitol in August.

The remaining 43 time capsules will be distributed to the neighbor islands and schools throughout the state.

Members of the public may stop by the Governor’s Office, on the fifth floor of the Hawai‘i State Capitol during regular business hours to drop off small items to be included in the capsules.  The Commission has planned a comprehensive year-long series of events and programs, with a special focus on education, to honor the 50th anniversary of Hawai‘i’s admission to the United States.

Since August 2008, the Commission has been airing the 50 Voices of Statehood series of radio and television vignettes featuring personal perspectives on statehood and Hawai‘i’s history from 50 residents representing the state’s diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, political, social and economic backgrounds.

The 50 Voices of Statehood series, as well as information on commemorative events planned statewide throughout this month may be found at .http://hawaii.gov/statehood/

The Commission’s capstone event, a commemorative conference titled “New Horizons for the Next 50 Years,” will take place August 21, 2009 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
