Life of the Land? OHA Trustee Seeks to Change State Motto
By Video @ 2:52 PM :: 6636 Views :: Akaka Bill, Hawaii History

On his Think Tech Video program, Grassroot Institute President Keli’i Akina interviews OHA Trustee Peter Apo.  At the 10:00 mark Apo argues that the State Motto – “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Āina i ka Pono” has been “mistranslated” as “The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness” for the last 160 years.  Apo’s newspeak version would read: “The Sovereignty of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness” – a slogan which just happens to dovetail with the latest push for the Akaka Tribe.  How convenient.

July 31, 1843  King Kamehameha III said Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Āina i ka Pono” in response to a decision by British Admiral Thomas to end six months of occupation by lower-ranking British Admiral Paulet and restore Kamehameha III.  From that date the official Hawaiian Kingdom English translation of Kamehameha III's saying has been the same as it is today.  On July 31, 2013, Hawaii will mark 170th anniversary of “Restoration Day.”

At 12:00 Apo discusses has satisfaction that property developers have a “consciousness” of the importance of “a Hawaiian sense of place.”  Apo has formed a consultancy to contract with developers to provide services.  Says Apo, “I’ve been busy.”
