Rep. McDermott critical of new state budget for ignoring pressing needs at Campbell High School

News Release from Office of Rep Bob McDermott May 6, 2015

Today State Representative Bob McDermott blasted the State Budget for its lack of funds for the critically overcrowded Campbell High School. McDermott said Campbell was built to service 1800 students, it now has 3000 children on campus, and is projected to increase to 3500 within 3-5 years.

He further stated that teachers are in essence nomads with no classroom to call their own; they must float to any open space. Then the instructors are faced with providing a quality education with 35 to 40 students stuffed into a stifling classroom.

McDermott point out that the Budget included 9 million dollars for a performing arts center, and another 1.2 million for a recording studio at some other Oahu schools. Yet not a dollar for even a single portable classroom for Campbell. He questioned the sense and priorities of the House finance committee.

McDermott concluded, I talked to the finance chair and I told her of the critical needs at Campbell. But, back room deals and alliance maintenance overcame the genuine need of our kids.
