Maui Memorial Hospital CEO Resigns
By News Release @ 8:52 PM :: 4098 Views :: Maui County, Health Care

From HHSC Maui Region Board Chair, Avery B. Chumbley:

Email to HHSC Maui Region Contact List, September 16, 2016

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Maui Region Board announces Chief Executive Officer Wesley Lo’s departure effective October 31, 2016 after 13 years of service.  The Board has begun discussions on the search process for the next CEO and will continue that discussion on Tuesday at its next meeting.  We thank the staff for their patience throughout this process.

On behalf of Maui Region Board, we thank Wes for his extraordinary vision and leadership, most importantly the successful attainment of Act 103, allowing for a more vibrant healthcare future for the region with the transition to Kaiser.

Under Wes’ leadership, Maui Region expanded and improved its physical facility campus with the construction of the Kahului tower and Maui Outpatient Clinic; opened a 24/7 emergent cardiovascular services program; led the HHSC regionalization effort allowing Maui Region more control over its resources to grow services for this community.  Wes supported the growth and development of staff and services in a way that allowed our region to explore its potential in a way we never thought possible.

While Wes’ shoes will be extremely difficult to fill - I have complete confidence that as a Region we will continue his positive trajectory forward.  We thank Wes for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm and motivation he has given our community these last 13 years as our CEO.  Though he will be greatly missed, we look forward to following the continued success in his career as he works to improve Maui’s healthcare delivery system as the new CEO for Hale Makua.

Maui Memorial: Kowtowing to Unions Costs Another $25M

Maui News Sept 17, 2016: Maui Region Chairman Avery Chumbley said Friday that even "if the stars aligned tonight and we had a full moon" and Gov. David Ige had agreements with the unions, the HHCC and Kaiser, "it would not be possible to do that transition by October 31st," Lo's departure date.

The Maui Region Board is using July 1 as the transition date to Kaiser and is working on "contingency plans to get to that point."

"I can still remain hopeful, but I am not as optimistic" about moving up the date given the current status of negotiations and discussions, Chumbley said.

At the region board meeting Tuesday, Chumbley said members will be developing options to make it to the July 1 transfer date. Public hearings on those options, which likely mean service cuts, could happen in three to four weeks, he said.

Chumbley added that the state Legislature could offer emergency financial funding. If services were kept status quo, there would be an operational shortfall of about $25 million for the current fiscal year budget, he said….

Arguably, Lo’s greatest achievement was leading the public-private partnership measure that passed the Legislature and was signed into law in 2015….

Lo said that he had "every intention of completing" the transition to Kaiser, but with the date pushed back to July 2017, "I couldn't pass up this exciting opportunity with Hale Makua."
