UH Seeks Believers to Photograph King Tides for Sea Level Rise Propaganda

Community members will be trained to act as citizen scientists to 'Snap the Shore, See the Future'

King Tides
King Tides

In Hawai‘i and throughout the Pacific Islands, sea-level rise is occurring. While most people are not negatively impacted by the rising seas on a daily basis yet, “king tides,” the highest predicted tides that occur only a few times per year, give us a glimpse into the future and show what will likely be at risk.

(Translation: We need these pics so eco-activists can use them to claim that sea-level rise is already here.)

According to global projections, which are in line with what people in Hawai‘i can expect, a three-foot rise in sea-level by 2100 is predicted.

WRONG: Hawaii is rising out of the sea due to subsurface volcanic pressure.

In Hawai‘i and low-lying islands in the Pacific, this will be particularly devastating and could cause increased coastal flooding and beach loss, damage homes and infrastructure, endanger critical habitat, and impact tourism, a vital part of the state’s economy.

WRONG: Coral is alive--it grows to match the sea level.  Coral atolls will grow to match any sea level rise.

The University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program (Hawai‘i Sea Grant) is the project lead for this region of the Pacific for the International King Tides Project, “Snap the Shore, See the Future,” which captures and records extreme high tide events on a global scale (so they can be used to scare little children).

On Monday, November 7, Hawai‘i Sea Grant will train community members on how to participate as citizen scientists and photograph the king tides that occur where they live, work and play.

Media coverage is invited and encouraged (because you guys are all believers, too).

The upcoming king tides in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Islands will occur in the Republic of the Marshall Islands on November 15-16; Hawai‘i on November 17-18; American Samoa on December 12-13; and in Guam on December 13-14.

The University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program is part of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s prestigious School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. It supports an innovative program of research, education and extension services directed to the improved understanding and stewardship of coastal and marine resources of the state, region and nation. Science serving Hawai‘i and the Pacific since 1968.
