Crews set final guideway segments

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, December 23, 2016

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) has achieved a major construction milestone with the setting of the final guideway segments along Kamehameha Highway. The final segment has been put in place near Aloha Stadium.

Construction crews built nearly 11 miles of the elevated rail guideway that now runs from Kapolei through Waipahu, Pearl City and Aiea and into Halawa.

Crews finished setting the spans on the Kamehameha Highway section in one year’s time, having set the first span last December. The first span for the West Oahu Farrington Highway section of the guideway was set in May of 2014 and the last was set in March of 2016.

The guideway segments were cast at the project’s precast yard in Kapolei.

Post-tensioning, final set and finishing work on the guideway will follow the initial set, and will continue through January.

“We’ve made much progress on the construction of our rail project,” said HART Interim Executive Director and CEO Krishniah Murthy. “We want to congratulate HART’s West team and the hard-working Kiewit construction crews for their work. And we’d like to thank the members of the public for their cooperation, patience and for driving safely through our construction zones.”

West Oahu Farrington Highway and Kamehameha Highway Guideway by the numbers:

• Guideway length-10.8 miles-5.9 miles Kapolei to Pearl Highlands; 4.9 miles Pearl Highlands to Aloha Stadium; equivalent to 370 Aloha Stadium scoreboards laid end to end.

• Number of precast segments – 5,238

• Number of segments to make an average span, which is the distance between two columns – 12 on West Oahu Farrington Highway section; 14 on the Kamehameha Highway section.

• Approximate amount of concrete needed for average segment – 20 cubic yards

• Weight of an average segment – 40 tons, which is approximately equivalent to the combined weight of 160 Hawaiian monk seals.
