Kaniela Ing: “I don’t think establishment Democrats know where the hell they’re going”

Talking With Kaniela Ing, the Democratic Socialist Who Wants to Impeach Trump and Build a Working Class Party

From Splinter, May 5, 2018 (excerpts with desperately needed comments in parenthesis)

…Rep Kaniela Ing is a self-identified democratic socialist….

Ing’s platform is a laundry list of progressive, social democratic priorities….

In March, Ing made statewide news when he called longtime former Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye—for whom the international airport in Honolulu is named—an “alleged serial rapist.”… I voted to rename our airport after him. And then a woman very close to me showed me an (1992) article from The New York Times, (which everybody else in Hawaii read years ago) and it turned my world upside down….

The airport was a mistake…. (but discovering I have a 26-year long hole in my historical knowledge has not altered my certainty in the rightness of whatever I happen to believe at any particular moment)

In democratic socialism, we want to democratize everything, we want worker-controlled corporations…. (He wants to steal your stuff.)

But when it comes to whether or not we’re a capitalist party, sure—for now…. (My solid proletarian wife is a corporate lobbyist.)

I don’t think establishment Democrats know where the hell they’re going…. (Nobody has more expertise in "not knowing where the hell they are going" than Kaniela Ing.  Nobody.)

I would absolutely support a housing guarantee-type of proposal, and when it comes to livable jobs, I came up with this platform very, very early (Well, OK, it was February.  'Livable' means an HGEA or UPW job for every single person in Hawaii.  Do you know how to play solitare on the computer?)  Generally, anything that’s a human need shouldn’t be exploited as a for-profit commodity. …  (That worked out so well in the 1930s Ukraine.)

I want to champion a $3 trillion infrastructure spending deal….  (Like I said, we're a capitalist party.)

The only reason I got involved in public service is because I saw people who looked like me talked like me, dressed like me, and I thought it was something I could do.…  (Wow.  Just ... wow.)

A lot of brave women have been speaking up, but literally (Literally???) not one man in power has said “I believe you,” and [then] held other men accountable…. (Is he including himself?)

The first thing I’d like to do, which I don’t know if a lot of people on the left agree with (huh?), is impeach Donald Trump. (The 'first thing' -- like Ing is here, let the impeachment begin???)  I am sick of worrying if our government’s controlled by Russia....  (I was asleep for 2 years and when I woke up all the socialists were AGAINST Russia.  What did I miss?)
