GOVERNOR IGE APPOINTS JON YOSHIMURA TO OʻAHU SENATE SEAT, REPLACING WILL ESPERO

News Release from Office of the Governor, July 30, 2018

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige appointed Jon Yoshimura to the Oʻahu Senate seat previously occupied by former Sen. Will Espero. Yoshimura will represent District 19 until a new senator is elected in November’s General Election. Yoshimura is not running for the seat.

Yoshimura, who most recently worked in the renewable energy sector for Tesla and SolarCity Hawai‘i, was previously the communications director for Sen. Daniel K. Akaka. Prior to that, he was a Honolulu city councilmember (District VI), an attorney and a reporter at KHON2-TV.

Yoshimura graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with a B.A. in journalism and earned his J.D. from the William S. Richardson School of Law.

“Jon has the knowledge and skills to ably represent the people of this district until the new senator is elected in November. I’m pleased that he was willing to take on this responsibility,” said Gov. Ige.

“I’m humbled by the appointment and I’d like to thank Governor Ige and Ewa party officials for this opportunity to serve. I will use my experience as a former city councilmember and concentrate on constituent service during my time in office,” said Yoshimura.

Gov. Ige is required by law to make his selection from a list of three nominees submitted to him by the Democratic Party of Oʻahu.
