HONOLULU – Kalani High’s students, parents and staff celebrated the dedication of several new athletics facilities today including a new Girls’ Locker Room, an Athletics Trainers’ Facility, a Judo and Wrestling room, additional field storage for the Track and Field area and a renovation of the existing Girls’ Physical Education (PE) Locker Room and shower facilities.

“The new Girls’ Locker Room is a great step forward towards our goal of ensuring equity for all of our female student athletes,” said Deputy Superintendent Phyllis Unebasami. “We are committed to providing equal opportunities in all aspects of education and this new facility gives the Lady Falcons a solid foundation of support in all sports.”

The 19,300 square-foot athletics facility addresses Title IX gender equity requirements by providing the school with its first girls’ athletic locker room.  The new facility provides female athletes with personal lockers, access to hot showers, an area for game planning, and the convenience of a closer proximity to their athletic trainers.

“This new locker room is an essential part to our growing athletics program,” said Lauren Horita, Student Body President of Kalani High School and varsity soccer player.  “This new building not only impacts us, but also future generations of lady falcons as they are now given the resources to follow their dreams.

Project construction began in February 2017 at an approximate cost of $7.6 million.  The project also included new restrooms, parking, utilities and improvements to drainage, walkways and landscaping.

“We want to thank all of our students, families, legislators, alumni, our coaches and the community for their support of our academics and athletics programs throughout the years,” said Principal Mitchell Otani. “Our female Falcon athletes finally have a place to call their own and we look forward to even greater success.”

Kalani High has an enrollment of 1,422 students and is home to 71 sports teams, 37 of which are girls’ teams.
