Elections and Voting

The General Election is Right Around the Corner: Time to Register (and Check your Registration)

Although participation in the primary is moving in the right direction, there are still a lot of eligible voters in the state who are not registered to vote.  If you are one of those people, you can register until October 5th.  You qualify to vote in the State of Hawaii if you are:

A U.S. Citizen.  Non-U.S. citizens, including U.S. nationals do not qualify.
A Resident of the State of Hawaii.  The residence stated by the applicant cannot simply be because of their presence in the State, but that the residence was acquired with the intent to make Hawaii the person's legal residence with all the accompanying obligations therein.
At least eighteen (18) years of age. Hawaii law allows qualified individuals to pre-register at sixteen (16) years of age.  Upon reaching eighteen (18) years of age, they will be automatically registered.

By accessing the online portal, you will also be able to:
Update your existing voter registration
Confirm your voter registration address

In order to register, you will need your current Hawaii Driver's License or Hawaii State ID card and your Social Security Number.  If you do NOT have a Hawaii Driver's License or Hawaii State ID, please use the Voter Registration form.

Receiving Your Ballot: All properly registered voters will receive a mail ballot packet approximately 18 days prior to the election.

Voters should expect to receive their General Election mail ballot packet by October 16. If they do not, they should contact their County Elections Division for a replacement.

Oahu on Lockdown, Again!

While the neighbor islands brace for the potential uptick of cases, Oahu leaders have made the choice to once again lock down the Oahu community.  Governor Ige approved Mayor Caldwell's Stay at Home, Work at Home Order which took effect this past Thursday at 12:01 a.m. and continues for two weeks. Violating the mandated order will be similar to other misdemeanors and also include a maximum penalty of one year in jail, a $5,000 citation or both.

Extension of the Moratorium for the Disconnection of Electric Utilities

The extension of the moratorium for the disconnection of electric utilities has been extended to December 31, 2020. Hawaiian Electric encourages customers that need assistance and qualify to seek utility bill assistance from government and non-profit resources as needed to ensure their bill payments are manageable.

DOE Extends Distance Learning

The Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) announced that it is extending distance learning for most public students statewide through the entire first quarter ending on Oct. 2. The extension applies to all Oahu schools and most neighbor island schools.
The DOE is working with officials to see if and when students can safely return to in person blended learning models and that they will communicate with schools and families as decisions are made.

Alliance Defending Freedom and COVID-19

As the world weathers the challenges of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, you've likely experienced drastic changes to your daily life. (Click here to read ADF's COVID-19 Reopening Resource)
In the past few weeks, as officials attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19, some have overstepped their authority. At times, these officials quickly course-correct after learning the unintended consequences of their orders. Some have taken prodding from ADF letters to set the record-and the law-straight. Others continue to violate the First Amendment, particularly when it comes to regulations placed on churches and other ministries.
