Duke and Lynn Announce Agenda for Justice

From www.AionaFinnegan.com

HONOLULU - Duke Aiona and Lynn Finnegan today announced their policy agenda for the Judicial Branch of the State of Hawai‘i.

An Aiona-Finnegan Administration will champion an accessible and impartial judicial system for all of Hawai‘i's citizens; focus the role of prisons and state law enforcement agencies; be a strong advocate for fair, consistent and swift, sure punishment for crime; and work to develop programs for restorative justice in our law school, courts and law enforcement community.

"For me, it became apparent early on that being a judge wasn't really about me or who I had become; it was about the institution, about justice and serving a cause greater than myself," said Duke Aiona. "Our Administration will work to ensure justice and accountability for both victims and defendants, and seek a model of restorative justice that uses victim empowerment, reparations and mediation to develop a solution that benefits both parties."

As the founding judge of the Hawai‘i Drug Court, Duke Aiona knows firsthand that specialty courts excel in reducing offenders' relapse into crime. An Aiona-Finnegan Administration will work with the legal system to sustain specialty courts and create others as an alternative to prison, including DUI (Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs) Court, Domestic Violence Court, Homelessness Court and Military Veterans' Court.

Duke Aiona will promote greater collaboration between state law enforcement personnel and our federal and local partners, reviewing the functions of the various state law enforcement agencies and, where possible, consolidate their duties, jurisdictions and management.

He will also champion community-based programs that enable people to prevent or reduce crime, such as neighborhood watch, weed and seed, and community policing - freeing up law enforcement resources. And Duke and Lynn strongly support using the latest technology to monitor parolees and probationers.
