A Gallup Poll of Hawaii adults released this week shows that over the last year, the proportion of Hawaii residents identifying as conservative has increased by 3.4% to 31.0%. Moderates have dropped 3.8% to 39.5%. Liberals have increased by 1.8% to 25.4%. Another 4.1% did not identify themselves ideologically.
President Barack Obama’s approval/disapproval numbers are 56.1/32.6. These numbers represent a 9.8% drop in Obama’s approval—the largest one-year drop of any state. In 2009 Obama’s approval rate in Hawaii reached 70.1%. Obama’s approval ratings dropped in 47 of the 50 states—a finding which bodes ill for his reelection chances.
Of the 50 states, Hawaii is the second least conservative and the fifth most liberal—but conservatives outnumber liberals in every state except Massachusetts.
Hawaii is also no longer the number one in moderates—a title enjoyed by the Aloha State in 2009 and 2010. Hawaii is now 5th.
Hawaii is the number one state for “Democrat/lean Democrat” at 53.8%. Hawaii has the smallest number of Republicans at 25.4%. The Democrat numbers are a slight increase from 50% Democrats in 2010, but a substantial decrease from the 60% who identified as Democrat in 2008.
