Governor Releases $20 Million for Various CIPs Statewide

News Release from www.Hawaii.gov/gov June 8, 2012 - Projects invest in disaster readiness, energy use planning, improvements at veterans cemeteries, and more

HONOLULU – Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $20 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) statewide. These projects cover a range of areas, including the fortification and expansion our state’s civil defense and disaster readiness, investments in our health and public safety facilities, short- and long-term planning of energy use at state buildings, and ensuring that our state veterans cemeteries continue to serve as fitting final resting places of our valiant heroes.

“These priority projects may now move forward as part of our ongoing strategy to further stimulate Hawai'i’s economy by investing in needed maintenance and improvements to state infrastructure,” said Governor Abercrombie.

Funds for the following priority projects, identified by members of the state Legislature, were approved and released by the Governor:

Civil Defense

$9,553,438 - Maritime Network System Design and Construction, statewide - System will provide advance warning of a potential threat to security staff, provide emergency mangers with enhanced situational awareness and improved command and control capabilities to effectively respond to and recover from a security breach and/or incident

$3,328,000 - Hawai'i State Civil Defense Disaster Warning System, statewide - Installation of new warning sirens or replacement of existing emergency warning sirens

$1,000,000 - Hurricane Shelters, statewide - Design funds to retrofit various public facilities with hurricane-protective measures to increase enhance safety and quantity of hurricane shelter spaces

$286,950 - Birkhimer Tunnel, O'ahu - Replacement of generator and other improvements


Energy

$335,000 - Energy Conservation and Sustainable Design Improvements, statewide - Planning of short- and long-term energy conservation improvements for public buildings, including identifying energy priorities, pinpointing critical buildings for energy efficiency improvements, and establishing best management practices for energy efficiencies; project will also develop a renewable energy strategy that will determine the best technologies and locations for future energy conservation improvements


Heath/Care Facilities

$1,590,000 - Maui Memorial Medical Center, Maui - Design and equipment for project “Phase II” improvements and expansion

$1,000,000 - St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawai'i, O'ahu - Grant for design and construction of the Intergenerational Center in 'Ewa Village that will offer adult and child day care services, with separate and common areas designated for older adults and children

$140,000 - Maui Memorial Medical Center, Maui – Upgrades to the water treatment system equipment for the dialysis unit

$71,205 - Leahi Hospital, O'ahu - Renovation of public restrooms to meet ADA requirements

$35,000 - Hawai'i State Hospital, O'ahu - Construction of various improvements around access gates to improve security, installation of additional magnetic locks to access gates, and relocation of surveillance cameras and associated electrical improvements

$1,313 - Maluhia Hospital – Installation of new automatic doors


Public Safety

$1,000,000 - Department of Public Safety Facilities, O'ahu - Additional funding for an energy savings performance contract allowing for replacement of shower and kitchen facilities/appliance at the Halawa Maximum Security Facility, as well as exhaust vents on the roof of the medium security facility


Veterans

$1,461,000 – State Veterans Cemeteries, statewide - Renovations and other improvements at various state cemeteries, including the East Hawai'i Veterans Cemetery No. 2, Ho'olehua Veterans Cemetery, Lana'i Veterans Cemetery, Makawao Veterans Cemetery, and Kaua'i Veterans Cemetery

$250,000 - Makawao Veterans Cemetery, Maui – Planning for expansion of the cemetery
