Hawaii Family Forum Committed to the Long Haul

Dear Friends:

As you are aware, Christians are in the most significant battle of their lives to protect religious liberty and the institution of marriage in Hawaii. What many of you already know is that Hawaii Family Forum, as a 501 C3 organization is limited to what we are able to do by law, and therefore, Hawaii Family Advocates (a 501 C4 sister organization) has recently reorganized a sister group under the leadership of one of Hawaii's leading civil rights attorney, Jim Hochberg.

Recently, Jim (an allied attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom) represented Hawaii Family Forum and defeated same sex marriage advocates who wanted to impose same sex marriage on the people of Hawaii. After the elections are over, we will be confronted with battles on the legislative front - and we will not be going anywhere. We intend to continue to stand strong for LIFE, FAMILY and RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!

Please see the announcement from Hawaii Family Advocates below. If you do not want to receive their email communication, please respond accordingly.

Thanks again for your faithfulness to Hawaii Family Forum.

Aloha,

Francis Oda

President, Hawaii Family Forum

FROM THE DESK OF JIM HOCHBERG

PRESIDENT, HAWAII FAMILY ADVOCATES,

a 501C4 educational organization

Have you noticed the change?

The names are the same. Family Equality Hawaii. George Soros. ACLU. Moveon.org. NARAL. Human Rights Commission. Tim Gil. Just to name a few.

These mega-wealthy donors and organizations have in recent years made significant changes to the strategy they rely upon to force their radical agenda through state legislatures. They’ve made the changes under the radar. They hope people like you, me, and others who share our values won’t notice.

That’s what makes their strategy so dangerous – it’s stealth.

These quiet changes are a big reason they’ve enjoyed so much success in recent years at the ballot box and in state legislatures across the county – including here in Hawaii. And they’re why Hawaii Family Forum’s (HFF) board of directors and I have made a critical change to our strategy. It’s a critical change we believe is required to address the growing threats posed to life, liberty, marriage and the family.

Thanks to your generous support and God’s amazing grace, HFF has accomplished a lot in defense of Hawaii families and the timeless values you and I share. It’s been a real blessing to stand with friends like you in defense of marriage as God intended, life God created, religious liberties God granted, and many other critical culture-defining issues.

What you might not know, though, is that the I.R.S. has restricted what HFF could do in those areas.

And it’s those restrictions that our opponent’s new strategy exploits.

Now, to be clear, the I.R.S. restrictions aren’t because HFF did anything wrong. The restrictions are simply standard I.R.S. rules governing all charitable organizations that operate as what’s called a 501(c)(3).

Let me explain. And, I apologize in advance for the legal-speak.

HFF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. For perspective, your church is also a 501(c)(3). 501(c)(3) organizations are primarily educational and, as a result, donations made to them are tax-deductible. In exchange for that benefit, the I.R.S. places severe restrictions on what 501(c)(3) organizations can say and do when it comes to public policy.

Our opponents used to operate under those same restrictions…but not anymore.

In recent years, they’ve quietly adjusted their strategy so they could conduct their public policy battles through organizations that weren’t limited by the restrictions placed on 501(c)(3) organizations. Of course, that meant their supporters no longer got a tax-deduction for their contributions. But, it also meant the organizations could be much, much more aggressive in promoting their radical agenda. Unfortunately, the results speak for themselves. Their strategic change is paying big dividends.

Here is just one local example: Family Equality Hawaii recently raised $70,000 and has declared that it will be at the legislature next year demanding same sex marriage. Read all about right here on the front page of their website!

This is just the tip of the iceberg and that’s why the HFF board felt it was important that we level the playing field by making a strategic shift of our own.

You can rest assured we didn’t make this decision lightly. We’ve sought the advice of some of America’s top strategic and legal minds in considering all of our options. And, of course, we bathed this decision in prayer – asking God to provide us with the wisdom and clarity to discern His plan for HFF.

You’re probably wondering what this strategic change means for you. It’s simple really. The HFF Board created Hawaii Family Advocates (HFA) in 2010 to provide the same C4 work alongside HFF. It sat dormant until this June when a new board was appointed to take over and exercise the benefits the C4 provides to effect this election.

HFF will work alongside HFA. HFF will be exclusively for the 501(c)(3) work your loyal support has allowed us to do over the years. We’ll continue to do things like growing our pastor and church network, Truth Project training, and other educational projects through the 501(c)(3). So, if you want to support those important projects you can – and still receive a tax-deduction for your donation.

HFA will be the primary organization through which the programs dealing with culture-changing battles – will be run. And because it’s not organized as a 501(c)(3) it won’t face the same I.R.S. restrictions as HFF.

That means we’ll level the playing field. And, with your continued support, we’ll be able to go toe-to-toe with opposition.

If you and I take a strong stand and fully support HFAs new strategy to counter the extreme liberal agenda, we can win. I hope you’ll prayerfully consider supporting HFA’s important work. Together, with your support, I’m confident we will win.

If you want to join the HFA team or receive more information, simply email us. We will contact you immediately and send you a membership card to fill out. If you fill led, you can also make a donation directly to HFA (donations to a 501C4 are NOT tax deductible) by contacting us and we will how you how.

Thank you, in advance, for your support of both Hawaii Family Forum and Hawaii Family Advocates.

Sincerely,

JAMES HOCHBERG, ESQ.

HFA President
