AP: Hawaii Hurricane response test reveals shortfalls
By Selected News Articles @ 6:58 PM :: 5423 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment

 IMAGE: CAT 4 Hurricane Felicia takes aim at Hilo, but is projected to weaken before landfall.

[Image of 5-day forecast and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]

(And here's what would happen if a CAT 4 hit Oahu....)

A powerful hurricane would shut down Hawaiian Electric's grid for 30 days. Streets as far inland as Beretania and the H-1 freeway would be flooded. Debris would block roads. And homes would be damaged across the island of Oahu, if a powerful hurricane struck Oahu, officials said.  The imagined scenario officials have been working with calls for a Category 4 hurricane -- meaning a storm with sustained winds over 130 mph -- to make landfall at Kapolei.

Congressional townhall meetings go wild (Coming to Hawaii next week?)
By Selected News Articles @ 6:26 PM :: 9189 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics

Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

We at Hawai`i Free Press care about voter participation, so here is a convenient list of upcoming Neil Abercrombie Town Hall events.  Don't be shy...

Inouye salutes Statehood
By News Release @ 1:38 PM :: 4132 Views :: Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics

Three years ago, a Statehood Rally was attacked at Iolani as police stood by.  Now this from Inouye:

"The territory of Hawaii was annexed to the United States in 1898 by a joint resolution of Congress based on a treaty signed with the Hawaiian government.  For many years thereafter, many delegations of congressmen and senators visited the territory to consider the pleas submitted by generations of our people requesting statehood."

These lines are sure to aggrivate the phony "sovereignty" activists--drug dealers, mortgage scammers, child abusers and others paid by OHA to create an argument for the Akaka Bill by pretending to oppose it in favor of "independence".  But Hawaii's elite have decided to turn off the faucet on OHA's goons--for now.  What will happen AFTER Admission Day?

And so the Democrat media boss Klein, head of CNN's US operations, is now creating and spreading a new false claim about Obama's birth certificate--that Hawaii has destroyed all paper records.

CNN talkers under Klein -- including Paul Begala and James Carville -- are part of a daily conference call led by Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.  Is Klein also on that call?  Has the White House asked for the upsurge in Birther coverage in order to mask the collapse of Obamacare in Congress?  Don't hold your breath for reporters to ask Klein this question.

Don't be fooled: Obama was Born in Hawaii
By Andrew Walden @ 4:42 PM :: 6731 Views :: Energy, Environment, National News, Ethics

(New audio debate: Walden vs Berg on Tennessee radio station.)

(Notice how the Obama media has suddenly chosen to focus on the birthers just as Obama's socialized health care scheme falls apart in Congress?  Precisely as this writer has explained again and again, the "birthers" are very helpful to Obama.  He uses them to portray his opponents as loons.  He also uses them as a cudgel against any investigation of his past or his associations.)

Led by 9-11 trooothers like Pennsylvania Democrat Phil Berg, the scammers claiming that Barack Obama was born outside the US are continuing to work day and night to divert Obama's opponents into useless tin-foil-hat conspiracy theories.  Every day they come up with a distracting new lie.

As Obama's hero Saul Alinsky explains:   “The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength.”

Gov Lingle vetoes bills that would hurt job creation
By News Release @ 11:15 PM :: 2941 Views :: Energy, Environment

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle today vetoed five bills that would discourage the creation of more jobs in the state of Hawai‘i.  The Governor issued the vetoes one day in advance of the constitutional veto deadline to highlight the need to ensure that Hawai‘i’s economic recovery is not undermined by legislation that would make it harder for employers to hire and retain their workforce.

“The primary focus of my five-point economic recovery plan is to encourage the creation of jobs in the private sector.  This is also the focus of President Obama’s federal economic stimulus efforts,” said Governor Lingle.  “It is important that government not send the wrong message to employers and not make it harder or more expensive for them to keep and retain good staff.  In addition, it is important for government to respect the rights of employees who are in the workforce.”

Gov Lingle submits potential veto list to Legislature
By News Release @ 4:36 PM :: 3186 Views :: Energy, Environment

Specific areas of concern include bills that would extract more taxes from state residents (HB 1271, SB 1678 and HB 1544); impact end-of-life choices (HB 1379); curtail affordable housing choices (SB 1160 and SB 1350); and, remove the Public Utility Commission’s oversight to control basic telephone service (SB 603).

In addition, due to the unprecedented $2.7 billion revenue shortfall between now and June 30, 2011, as projected by the Council on Revenues, the Lingle-Aiona Administration has increased scrutiny of all bills for potential budgetary implications.  As a result, a number of bills were put on the potential veto list because they call for new or increased spending at a time when the State cannot afford to expand the cost of government or further deplete the State’s limited fiscal resources.  Twelve bills on the list fall into this category of potentially negative fiscal implications (HB 36, HB 343, HB 358, HB 982, HB 986, HB 989, HB 1504, HB 1809, SB 266, SB 423, SB 1248 and SB 1665).
