And yet the officials of UPW here want to clamp down unreasonably on what the public hears about its negotiations with the state and county administrations over a new contract.

Visitor arrivals fell 6.4 percent in May

Year-to-date 2009 arrivals by air totaled 2,611,452 visitors, 10.5 percent fewer compared to a year ago, according to the data released today by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. The average daily spending was $167 per person, down from $181 per person for the first five months of 2008.

Internet tax would bring in dollars

Gov. Linda Lingle has been offered two ways to capture those dollars. The one that would do least harm to Hawaii businesses would be to join other states that seek a uniform system to collect the taxes across state lines.

The alternative method would allow the state to partially collect general excise taxes from mainland companies on sales in Hawaii through Hawaii-based sales affiliates that are paid commissions for linking to the retailer. The method is modeled after a New York state law that is being challenged in court by Amazon.com and Overstock.com, which are appealing a lower-court ruling in favor of the state.

The state Department of Taxation said a second round of letters informing people and businesses their names would be listed as owing large taxes has yielded three of 20 taxpayers coming forward to settle with the state.
