Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools Need Your Help

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) did not follow its own grants process and should reset its grants process to allow for the $3 million (over two years) in Hawaiian Focused Charter School (HFCS) monies to go directly to the HFCS's instead of going through the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), a political organization with a loaded agenda.  CNHA did not consult with principals, staff, board members, parents, and other stakeholders of HFCS before applying for these monies on their behalf.  Furthermore, CNHA as an organization has a mission and vision that is not aligned with Hawaiian Charter Schools and may very well be ill equipped to advance community driven and culturally responsive Hawaiian education.  These OHA monies are important to the operations and survival of HFCS since they only receive 50-60% of the per pupil allocation from the State of Hawai'i that traditional Department of Education Schools receive.  As a parent of Hālau Kū Māna New Century Charter School I am asking for your help.

Here is what you can do to help.

1.  Sign a letter asking OHA to give $3 million in HFCS funding directly to the Hawaiian Charter Schools.  Send this NEW form letter by clicking here  FORM LETTER TO OHA TRUSTEES AND CEO ASKING THEM TO RESET THE GRANTS PROCESS

2.  Sign a letter asking CNHA not to accept these fund on the behalf of Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools by clicking here FORM LETTER TO CNHA CEO & BOARD.

3.  Attend the next OHA Board meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, October 11, 2017.

ALERT! - TELL OHA NO CHARTER SCHOOL FUNDS TO THE CNHA

Please forward this to all Hawaiians and our supporters.

We want to make you aware this Wednesday's OHA Resource Management Committee meeting, October 11, 2017 at 10 AM includes an action item for trustees to decide what they want to do about the CNHA grant and if they instead want to give funds directly to the charter schools by eliminating the "administrator" aka middle-man.

Please encourage as many people as possible to come to the meeting and give public testimony before the Trustees go into Executive Session to discuss the matter privately with legal counsel

When the Trustees come out of executive session, they will vote on their recommendation during open session.

Please give a short and simple testimony that asks the trustees to all make the same decision.

Please speak slowly and deliberately look at each trustee in the eyes as you say their name.

Hereʻs all you have to say -

"Chair Hulu, Vice Chair Waihe`e, Board Chair Machado, Board Vice Chair Ahuna, Trustee Ahu Isa, Trustee Akana, Trustee Akina, Trustee Apo, Trustee Bob Lindsey, I humbly ask all of you to please rescind the CNHA Charter School grant and instead, give the charter school funds directly to each of the 17 Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools. Mahalo for your support."

That's all there is to it.

For those of you that cannot attend Wednesdayʻs meeting, please send an email to the trustees before Wednesday with the above message.

It is critical for everyone to repeat the same message in order to impress upon the trustees that everyone is united in a desire to financially support the charter schools directly.

Feel free to share this with your charter school contacts also.

Please contact OHA today -

Mahalo.
