DJOU DRAFTS LEGISLATION CALLING FOR FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH PHILIPPINES
Washington, DC — Congressman Charles Djou (HI-01) issued the following statement today after submitting his first piece of legislation, a resolution calling for the United States to enter into a free trade agreement with the Republic of the Philippines:
“We must ensure that the connection between the United States and the Philippines remains strong. This resolution moves us toward a deeper partnership with the Philippines, who have been a constant and crucial ally.
“A vibrant American-Filipino relationship is in the best interests of the United States and Hawai‘i in particular where roughly one-fifth of the population is of Filipino descent. Strengthening that relationship will provide for a stronger and more prosperous Hawai‘i.”
Congressman Djou delivers his resolution to the House floor
Congressman Djou has made it a priority throughout his career in elected office to reach out to the Filipino community and has continued to be supportive since coming to Washington. Just last week, Congressman Djou and his wife Stacey joined His Excellency Willy Gaa, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines at a reception commemorating the 112th anniversary of Philippine Independence at the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.
Congressman Djou will continue to advocate for a free trade agreement with the Republic of the Philippines as well as expanding the number of visas the U.S. Government issues, particularly those for the purpose of family reunification.
