Rep Fontaine Thanks Gov Abercrombie for Signing “Move Over” Bill into Law

News Release from Office of Rep George Fontaine

Emergency workers all over Hawaii are pleased that Governor Abercrombie Tuesday signed into law, HB2030, the “Move Over” Bill cosponsored by Rep George Fontaine (Kihei, Wailea) and 16 other legislators.  The new law comes in the wake of the tragic deaths of Honolulu police officers Eric Fontes, killed last September during a Farrington Highway traffic stop, and Garret Davis, killed this January while assisting a stalled motorist on the H-1.

During the session, Rep Fontaine spoke in on the House floor in support HB 2030:

"It would seem common sense that people would slow down and move out of the way of a public servant doing his duty.  With this bill, we will ensure the safety and the protection of lives of our law enforcement and service personnel."

Rep Fontaine is a retired Maui Police Captain and the only former police officer in the Legislature.

HB2030 took effect immediately upon Governor Abercrombie’s signature as Act 318.  Hawaii had been the only state in the union to not have a "move over" law.
