NIMBY: ‘Overhyped, overused, inaccurate, simplistic and selfish’
CB: … “We don’t want it here. It doesn’t belong in our neighborhood.”
Neighborhood preservation claims are overhyped and overused. It’s as if preservation is automatically more important than anything else. It’s not.
More often than not, the claim is inaccurate, simplistic and selfish. Claiming a threat does not make it so. …

Case Fundraising Is Going Just Fine
CB: … Case, who represents urban Oʻahu, had $504,149 in cash on hand as of June 30, while Tokuda, who represents rural Oʻahu and the neighbor islands, had $402,276….
If Congressman Ed Case is in any political trouble for voting against most of his Democratic colleagues recently on some significant issues, it doesn’t show in the latest round of campaign finance reports.
Case had raised $262,981 this year as of June 30, according to reports filed this week with the Federal Election Commission. During the same period in the last election cycle leading up to the 2024 election, he had raised $152,080.
It’s early though. For the entire 2024 election cycle, Case raised almost $700,000 as he breezed to reelection, and it remains to be seen if he’ll match that next year and whether he’ll face significant opposition….

HIDoT Plan: Eliminate all Hawaii Cruise Ship Travel by 2040
BH: … Hawaii just made one of its clearest moves yet to reshape the travel experience. A new state roadmap calls for cutting one major type of visitor in half within ten years, and nearly eliminating them by 2040. While the policy officially targets cruise arrivals, that doesn’t even begin to describe the whole story. It’s part of a broader, bolder strategy now unfolding across the islands. It quietly rewrites the rules of who gets to come to Hawaii and how they’re expected to behave.
The state’s Department of Transportation released its “Emissions, Sea Level Rise, and Resilience Plan” in July. It is attached below. Inside is a line that caught our attention:
Hawaii will aim to reduce cruise arrivals by 50 percent by 2035 and “possibly phase out cruise ship tourism altogether” by 2040. It cites high emissions, crowding, and conflict with residents as the rationale. (State of Hawaii)
The plan doesn’t just address transportation. It signals a tourism strategy that favors high-spending resort guests. We’ve already seen this playing out with new rental restrictions, visitor fees, and reservation systems. The latest roadmap provides a clear direction for the first time….

Mountain West leader: Permanent stadium part of Hawaii’s membership deal
SA: … The Mountain West has emphasized that building a permanent football stadium is an essential part of the University of Hawaii’s membership.
The Rainbow Warriors have been without a permanent home venue since 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium was shuttered for spectator-attended events in December 2020. Although demolition of Aloha Stadium is projected to begin next month, the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District (NASED) has not finalized a key agreement with its private development partner. NASED’s hope is a new stadium in Halawa will be ready for the Warriors’ 2028 season opener. The Warriors have been using on-campus Ching Complex as a temporary venue for their home games.
On Wednesday, Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez said a permanent stadium for the Warriors is included in “their membership agreement.” Neither a deadline nor repercussion has been specified. UH is a football-only member of the Mountain West through June 30. After that, 15 other UH programs will join the Warriors as Mountain West members.
“The Mountain West contract is not our motivation to have the stadium,” UH athletic director Matt Elliott said. …

How Amazon and Maui pineapples could help diversify Hawaii’s economy
HNN: … Amazon cargo planes are shipping about 1,800 pineapples in bulk each week from Maui to the mainland.
Sen. Glenn Wakai thought of the idea when he heard the company’s cargo planes that drop goods to Hawaii leave empty.
“So I approached Amazon saying nothing is unacceptable. Let’s fill them with locally made products,” Wakai said.
Pallets of pineapples, Wakai added, can reach New York and Miami in about 12 hours, which is four times quicker than usual.
“In addition to that, there’s a huge cost savings. Somewhere in the magnitude of 60 percent cost savings,” Wakai said.
Because shipping costs are a big barrier for Hawaii manufacturers trying to reach the mainland, Wakai sees Amazon as the ticket for local products to break the market.
“So it’s more than just what comes out of the ground or gets picked off a tree. We’re talking ukulele, fashion, cookies, all kinds of things that are manufactured in Hawaii,” Wakai said. “I think this is a huge game changer to help blossom Hawaii manufacturing and help us diversify away from tourism.”
White added, “We invite other farmers in Hawaii to tap in to this opportunity to send their products to their customers on the mainland.” ….

SpaceX Rocket Splashdown Site Approved near Necker Island—Enviros want you to freak out
G: … The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency that oversees air and space travel in the US, announced in May that it had given Elon Musk permission to detonate rocket ships from his company SpaceX over these protected waters.
SpaceX first brought its request, a proposal called the Starship Super Heavy Project, to the FAA in 2022. In 2023, the company was given a license to launch its massive Starship rocket five times a year. In 2024, Musk proposed quintupling that number to 25 a year. SpaceX’s launch base is located in Boca Chica, Texas, surrounded by a state park and federal wildlife refuge. To date, 10 Starship rockets have attempted to take off from there, the majority of which have ended in scattershot explosions, blasting metal shrapnel and debris from the Gulf of Mexico to the Indian Ocean.
In conjunction with the increased number of launches, Musk proposed expanding the area in the Pacific Ocean where debris from his exploded Starships can land by roughly 75 times its original scope. This new area encompasses vast regions throughout the Pacific, including around the eight main Hawaiian islands, Mokumanamana (Necker) and the entire north-west Hawaiian chain of islands ….
