Scuttled Ship Latest in Hawaii’s poor history with history

SA: … The Falls of Clyde, the 146-year-old ship that lingered on the Honolulu waterfront during a decades-long debate over its future, was finally escorted early Wednesday to its final resting place, on the ocean floor 25 miles out….

The state Department of Transportation …in 2016… impounded the ship and awarded Shipwright LLC of Florida the $4.9 million contract to remove it. …

(CLUE:  $4.9M could have paid to stabilize the hull for transport to Scotland for restoration.)

… the languishing plans for the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial show another facet of this general failure….

(CLUE:  Natatorium is a great source for white-collar make work contracts.)

Kaniakapupu Ruins, featured in a hike in upper Nuuanu Valley, had been the royal summer home of Kamehameha III. What’s left of the home is itself inaccessible to the public because of vandalism.

Similarly, the Boyd-Irwin-Hedemann Estate in Maunawili, better known as the Queen’s Retreat, is said to be the site where Liliuokalani was inspired to write the classic “Aloha ‘Oe.” It was not cared for by a series of owners and was turned to rubble in a 2023 fire….

Passengers begin riding extended lines on Honolulu’s Skyline rail system

SA: … DTS Director Roger Morton rode aboard a 7:45 a.m. train Thursday where passengers nearly filled all 200 seats.

“We’re very happy with the first day,” Morton said.

Paid ridership continues today, with free service on Saturday and Sunday, but passengers riding for free still need a HOLO card to enter any station.

Ridership figures for the first four days’ of service won’t be released before Monday, Morton said.

DTS officials expect a weekend spike in passengers who will want to ride for free, just as they saw when the first segment of rail line opened for service in June 2023 from West Oahu to the Halawa station, across from the abandoned and empty Aloha Stadium….

First permanent affordable housing project for Lahaina fire survivors complete

HNN: … nearly 200 families now living there.

Right off the Lahaina Bypass, the development consists of 25 garden-style buildings comprised of two, three and four-bedroom apartment homes.

HPD: Ghost Gun Cases Double

CB: … In the first 10 months of 2024, HPD reported 68 ghost gun cases — more than twice as many as the same period the year before, Ernest Robello, then a lieutenant in the Honolulu Police Department’s Narcotics Vice Division, told state senators in February during a hearing on a bill to further restrict where firearms and firearms parts can be carried. Robello is now deputy director of administration for the state Department of Law Enforcement.

“When we do search warrants and when we do game rooms, the guns we’re finding are not registered guns or legal guns that were stolen from a car or a house,” he said. “They’re all ghost guns. And the main reason for that is the parts aren’t traceable.” …
